The same is the case for crypto. Many scams are occurring in crypto and they will continue because crypto is not regulated enough in India.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-do-indians-use-crypto\"><strong>Why do Indians use Crypto?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There has been an increase in the adoption of crypto compared to other financial assets in India. Irrespective of economic and social status, if people have an affinity towards modern thinking and technology, they are more likely to adopt crypto.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-big-scams-and-losses\"><strong>Big Scams and Losses<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite huge adoption, many don\u2019t have&nbsp; comprehensive knowledge about crypto. There are many scams in crypto starting from hacking into hot wallets, pump and dump schemes, fake airdrop scams and social media manipulation. Since many Indians use digital resources and technology, many remain unaware of&nbsp; how to protect their resources. This puts the players in danger when they face crypto scams.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other components to be considered are safety and energy consumption. The returns from crypto are not safe whereas Indians traditionally choose safe investments like bank fixed deposits, gold and real estate. The energy required for mining cryptos like BTC is huge enough to destroy the green goals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-rbi-and-government-s-perspective\"><strong>RBI and Government\u2019s Perspective<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The central bankers all over the world are worried about losing control over the global financial system and they are also doubtful about the stability and safety of crypto. Recently, stablecoins have been issued to counter the problem of cryptocurrency volatility. Many central bankers are still not convinced about the stability of stablecoins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Indian government hesitates to implement full crypto regulation, but only regulates crypto partially. The government is also of the opinion that adopting digital assets in the financial system will lead to systemic risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other side to be noted is that the government gets 30% tax on profits made through crypto and 1% TDS if the trade exceeds Rs 50,000. Many exchanges have been registered with the Financial Intelligence Unit(FIU) to bring transactions&nbsp; under control.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government is of the opinion that Central Bank Digital Currency(CBDC) can solve the problem and they are also considering a complete ban. They would have banned crypto if they did not get the slightest idea that the same transactions would be done through the black market. In order to curb black market activity, they have partially regulated it even though they want to ban it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pros-of-not-banning-crypto\"><strong>Pros of not banning crypto<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Banning crypto will not be successful as people will find ways to do it illegally<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Economically, it is an opportunity not to miss in terms of taxation, employment and innovation.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Regulation will be better than prohibition as the government can control effectively.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All countries are competing to lead in digital money. Most developed countries welcome crypto as it leads to faster transactions. Banning it can lead to India lagging behind.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Huge public demand makes the ban hard. If it is banned, then many people will be motivated to transact illegally through black markets.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cons-of-not-banning-crypto\"><strong>Cons of not banning crypto<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Many scams in cryptocurrencies revolve around both the lack of knowledge by players and lack of good digital infrastructure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is extremely volatile. If an increased number of people participate in crypto, then it can shake the financial system of the country.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Many people are falling prey to social media manipulation by following information on social media platforms.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>While some claim crypto generates profits, there are many who have incurred huge losses. Most stablecoins are pegged to the US dollar. When Indians use these stablecoins, they increase the flow of US dollars in India without RBI oversight. This hurts the Rupee and also diminishes the role of the RBI.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The money used for circulating and trading in cryptocurrency can be utilised for black money and terror funding by criminals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As per the current regulations, no losses can be carried forward to the next financial year. This makes Investing in cryptocurrency less attractive than investing in financial markets.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Lessons to be learnt<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some will say it should be banned, whereas others say it should not be banned. Some are of the opinion that half regulation is worse than either banning or not banning.
