Chainalysis identified at least $16.1 billion processed by these networks in 2025 alone. The firm tracked approximately 1,800 active wallets linked to these operations. As a result, these networks have expanded thousands of times faster than traditional crypto venues.

Criminals increasingly avoid centralized exchanges where authorities can freeze funds. Instead, they turn to CMLNs for their discretion and efficiency. The growth rate is stunning: inflows to these networks have grown 7,325 times faster than to centralized exchanges. Furthermore, they outpaced decentralized finance protocols by 1,810 times since 2020.

These Chinese-language services now handle diverse criminal activities. They process funds from investment scams, cryptocurrency hacks, and even human trafficking operations. Additionally, they serve organized crime groups across Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia. Therefore, their global reach continues to expand rapidly.

How These Laundering Networks Operate

CMLNs offer six distinct service types that cover every stage of money laundering. “Running point” brokers provide the initial entry by renting bank accounts and exchange wallets. They act as the first stop for dirty money entering the system.

Money mule networks form another critical component of these operations. These intermediaries help convert cash to crypto and vice versa. They use multiple accounts and payment platforms to fragment and disguise the money trail. By doing so tracking the funds becomes extremely difficult for investigators.

Informal OTC desks and “Black U” services also play significant roles. Black U services specifically trade tainted crypto at discounts of 10-20%. They openly advertise their ability to handle stolen or hacked cryptocurrency. In addition, these services process high-value transactions with remarkable speed, sometimes clearing deals in just 1.6 minutes.

Telegram-based “guarantee platforms” sit at the center of this ecosystem. These platforms function as escrow services and reputation systems. They connect buyers and sellers while building trust through user ratings and reviews. However, even when authorities shut down individual channels, vendors quickly migrate to new ones. Thus, the network remains largely functional despite enforcement efforts.

Also Read: UK Banks Anti-Crypto Stance Intensifies Even as Regulatory Process Moves Forward

Law Enforcement

Despite increased scrutiny from authorities, these networks continue to thrive. Recent U.S. Treasury sanctions targeted several entities linked to money laundering operations. Nevertheless, the networks demonstrate remarkable adaptability and resilience.

When enforcement actions disrupt one channel, operators simply move to another. This migration keeps their operations largely intact and functional. The networks maintain deep connections to off-chain criminal organizations, including scam operations and cybercrime rings.

The professionalization of these services makes them harder to combat. They advertise openly, display proof of liquidity, and emphasize rapid processing. Their industrial-scale operations show technical sophistication that matches legitimate businesses. As a result, they have evolved into a resilient global service industry.

Growing Threat

The explosive growth of crypto money laundering poses serious challenges for law enforcement worldwide. These networks now handle over 10% of funds from pig butchering scams. This represents a significant increase from minimal involvement in previous years. Indeed, the shift away from centralized exchanges has accelerated due to improved compliance measures.

Chainalysis emphasizes that disrupting these networks requires a comprehensive approach. Authorities must target operators and vendors directly, not just the platforms they use. Enhanced public-private partnerships can improve tracking and intelligence gathering. Moreover, combining open-source intelligence with blockchain analytics offers powerful investigative tools.

Global law enforcement agencies need better coordination for tracing and recovering illicit funds. Proactive measures can increase operational costs for criminals and deter future growth. Nevertheless, sustained efforts are essential to address underlying issues like capital controls and weak compliance. Otherwise, these networks will continue to grow and adapt.

The findings highlight a fundamental shift in the criminal economy. Crypto-enabled laundering has become more accessible, efficient, and global. While blockchain transparency helps analysts track these flows, criminals continue adapting their methods. Therefore, the battle between law enforcement and money launderers will likely intensify as cryptocurrency adoption grows.

Written By Fazal Ul Vahab C H

Synopsis: Crypto money laundering hit $82 billion in 2025, up from $10 billion in 2020, Chainalysis reports.
