Despite this, investors continue shifting away from risky assets. Broader macroeconomic uncertainty drives this trend. Quantum computing risks to Bitcoin&#8217;s security model have also emerged as concerns. Furthermore, Bitcoin&#8217;s network hashrate has fallen below one zetahash per second. The government redirects surplus energy toward Bitcoin mining. This strategy proves more profitable than selling excess power to neighboring India at low prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, mining economics have changed significantly. The 2024 Bitcoin halving roughly doubled the cost to mine one Bitcoin. Bhutan now mines far less cryptocurrency than in 2023. That year, the country mined 8,200 Bitcoin. Production has fallen considerably since the halving event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Between July 2021 and June 2023, Bhutan invested nearly $500 million. The funds converted unused infrastructure into crypto mining facilities. In April 2024, Druk Holding partnered with Bitdeer Technologies Group. The collaboration aimed to expand mining capacity sixfold to 600 megawatts. This expansion was designed to offset reduced mining rewards after the halving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bhutan&#8217;s mining partner maintains competitive costs. Bitdeer produces Bitcoin at approximately $20,000 per coin. This sits well below the global average of $45,000.
