His decision to take a stake in ETHZilla in 2025 was therefore seen by many as a notable endorsement of Ethereum&#8217;s potential as a corporate reserve asset which is precisely why his exit has attracted so much attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-ethzilla\"><strong>What Is ETHZilla?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>ETHZilla is a publicly traded company listed on Nasdaq under the ticker ETHZ. It originally operated under the name 180 Life Sciences Corp., a Florida-based biotech firm, before rebranding in August 2025 and pivoting entirely to an Ethereum treasury strategy modelled after Strategy&#8217;s (formerly MicroStrategy) well-known approach of holding Bitcoin as a primary corporate reserve asset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At its peak, ETHZilla accumulated more than 100,000 ETH tokens. Ethereum fell approximately 28.4% in Q4 2025 alone its first negative fourth quarter since 2022 and has continued to fall into 2026. By the time of writing, ETH is trading around $2,000, roughly 60% below its 2025 all-time high of $4,946.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the value of its crypto holdings eroded, ETHZilla was forced to liquidate significant portions of its Ethereum reserves to manage debt. In October 2025, it sold approximately $40 million worth of ETH to fund stock repurchases. In December, it sold a further $74.5 million worth to pay down senior secured convertible notes. The company currently holds approximately 69,802 ETH tokens, down from over 100,000 at its peak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ETHZilla also announced a $250 million stock buyback programme in a bid to reassure investors, and conducted a 1-for-10 reverse stock split in October 2025. Neither move was enough to arrest the decline. Shares of ETHZ are currently trading at around $3.62 approximately 98% below their August 2025 peak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adding to investor uncertainty, ETHZilla recently announced a significant pivot in strategy. Through a newly formed subsidiary called ETHZilla Aerospace, the company plans to tokenise equity stakes in leased commercial jet engines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its first project involves two CFM56 engines acquired for $12.2 million, with investors set to receive tokens representing a share of the monthly lease income paid by airlines. The company has also indicated plans to tokenise exposure to manufactured home loans and car loans. This sharp departure from its Ethereum treasury mandate appears to have been a final signal for Thiel and Founders Fund to exit entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-broader-trend\"><strong>A Broader Trend?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Thiel&#8217;s exit is not an isolated move. Founders Fund has also significantly reduced its position in BitMine Immersion Technologies (BMNR), the largest publicly traded Ethereum treasury firm. From more than 5 million shares held in July 2025, Founders Fund entities cut their BMNR holdings to roughly 2.5 million by September 2025. Shares of BMNR have themselves fallen nearly 64% in the past six months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The broader digital asset treasury sector is under serious strain. Ethereum&#8217;s prolonged price weakness has reduced the value of crypto holdings across the board, pressured company balance sheets, and prompted strategic rethinks at multiple firms.
