The excitement for the upcoming mega collaboration between two prominent Tamil stars, Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, has taken an unexpected turn. Director Sundar C has officially stepped out of ‘Thalaivar 173’.
The filmmaker who was set to helm this historic project announced his decision on November 13, 2025, through a note shared by his wife Khushbu Sundar, on Instagram. However, the post was later deleted.
The dream collaboration that had fans excited
Four days ago, Sundar’s wife, Khushbu Sundar, shared the post of update on ‘Thalaivar 173’ with the caption: “From humble origins to the golden age of greatness, they become the pillars of Tamil cinema. And now, once again, our heroes are back – ready to strike and shine in our industry. Superstar Rajinikanth sir in a #SundarC film produced by Kamal Haasan.”
The film was expected to be released on Pongal 2027 and was set to be directed by Sundar C, who is known for his blockbuster entertainers like Aranmanai and Theeya Velai Seiyyanum Kumaru.
The grand announcement had created buzz among the fans, and now the current news has sent shockwaves across the Tamil industry and fans are left wondering what is the reason behind this big decision and what lies ahead for the dream project.
Sundar C Confirms His Exit
Sundar C released an official statement on Thursday, November 13, where he expressed his regret over exiting the dream project. The director gave the reason of “unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances” for stepping down from ‘Thalaivar 173’.
He also added that it was an emotional decision and he will remain grateful to Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan for their trust and support. Further, he said that he promises to collaborate with them in the future when the right opportunity arises.
While the statement didn’t elaborate on the exact reasons, several inside reports suggest that the scheduling conflict and creative differences might be the main reasons.

What Happens To Thalaivar 173 Now?
Following Sundar C’s exit, the producers are actively in talks with another leading Tamil filmmaker to take charge of the project. However, no official statement has been announced yet. Given the circumstances, the production is now expected to be slightly delayed but RKFI is determined to keep the release window around Pongal 2027.
