Some exits we didn’t see coming, these character deaths surprised not only viewers, but changed the shows themselves. There’s a special kind of heartbreak that only television affords. You grow with character season after season. You laugh along with them, root for them, sometimes even hate them, until, suddenly, they’re gone. It takes away a part of you in a way. Many times people watch a show for that one character with whom they bonded from the very first episode. As the story progresses the bond feels more personal and you start secretly rooting for them in the show.

5. Ansari, Paatal Lok

ACP Imran Ansari was one of the central characters in the season 1 of Paatal Lok. As he played the central figure for the investigation in the episodes earlier, it was a shock when his character deaths were revealed. Nobody could have imagined a character as major as it could leave the show so early. His role in the show was always level-headed, always righteous, he was the man you thought would make it through. Until he didn’t. He always went out fighting for what is right and that was just one of the many good factors of his character. 

4. Robb & Catelyn Stark, Game of Thrones

The character deaths came and left without even giving the audience a second for any thoughts. Portrayed with authoritative calm by Richard Madden, Robb’s path was headed toward restoring the North to greatness. However, the creators had other plans in their minds. The betrayal was chilling and what followed the story after was a deafening silence. The death was a storytelling slaughter and it set a tone for the show that was irretrievable. The way the Stark family was killed was the main concern for all the fans. As Catelyn kept on begging for mercy to spare her son’s life, minute later both of them were gone.

3. Matthew Crawley, Downton Abbey

The Christmas Day special came with a major surprise in Downton Abbey. This big surprise was not something that audiences have been anticipating. The entire fanbase were met with the shocking news of Matthew Crawley’s death. This turn came in the most unexpected time of the story. One thing that fans were sad about was he died right after meeting his newborn for the first time at the hospital. Throughout the story Matthew had survived so many obstacles which had come his way but in the end he still couldn’t make it. The reason being a car crash was even more saddening because he had already been through the first world war.

2. Sarat, Grahan (2021)

Grahan combined the themes like political power and personal tragedies. The show’s emotional currency was Sarat played by Pawan Malhotra. The story then takes an unexpected turn with Sarat’s character death. His demise came right when the relationships were beginning to heal and the story was taking a positive turn. It was a death which left a huge gap in the fan’s heart. Though there are two discussions surrounding this move from the creators. One of the most loved characters in the show left in such a dramatic style that many were shocked. Even though there were some flaws when it comes to his past but audience started to bond with him as the story went forward. The sudden death of him made the story lose a little bit of its charm nonetheless the show went on. It was one of those twists which you didn’t see coming.

1. Ned Stark, Game of Thrones

When the actor who was established as the series’ main character was executed in season one, it set a new scar. The scene shocked viewers, who were accustomed to heroes enduring anything. But George R.R. Martin‘s cruel universe operated differently. Bean ground Stark with honour and restraint so that his death seemed like the loss of honour itself. It was acclaimed as risky storytelling by critics, though some fans were outraged at how soon it did.

Conclusion

These fatalities didn’t advance the plot but they advanced us. Whether it is a fictional character in a reality inspired show like Delhi crime or everyone’s beloved Ned Stark of Game of Thrones, each of these deaths brought a different direction to the entire plot. The one who were truly affected by all the character deaths are the audience. Each episode brought the viewers a bit closer to the character. Every scene was making them relate to the story and then suddenly when the writers take them out like nothing it does ache a little.
