Mahavatar Narsimha is a mythological animated film that got nominated for the Oscars 2026 for the best animated feature category, competing with other international films like Zootopia 2, K-Pop Demon Hunters and 33 other films.
The Indian animated movie is based on the mythological story of Vishnu’s fourth Avatar, Narsimha from the Bhagavata Purana.
Mahavatar Narsimha will compete against 35 renowned films across the globe for the 98th Academy awards. The movie made a strong impact in the theatres last year.
The film’s release has been a commercial success, heavily praised for its VFX and animation, being a movie of Indian origin. This proves that the Indian cinema is reaching the global stages. This made the movie achieve a major milestone.
Mahavatar Narsimha was directed by Ashwin Kumar, which was his directorial debut. The director said that Hollywood films like Terminator, Jurassic Park, Predator, Alien, Transformers, and Avatar inspired him. He also said that Japanese anime, too, inspired him.

Mahavatar Narsimha is also the first instalment of the movie franchise, planned for seven parts based on lord Vishnu’s ten avatars which was confirmed in the post-credits’ scene.
Additionally, the franchise will include titles such as Mahavatar Raghunandan, Mahavatar Dwarkadhish, Mahavatar Gokulananda, Mahavatar Kalki Part I, and Mahavatar Kalki Part II, concluding the cinematic universe in 2037.
