Every year, when the calendar turns to October 29, hearts across Karnataka grow heavy in the memory of the smile that once lit up millions of faces. The loss of Puneeth Rajkumar still feels unreal. Popular as  ‘Appu’, the name given by his dear fans, Puneeth Rajkumar passed away on October 29, 2021, just at the age of 46 due to a massive cardiac arrest. 

The late actor’s wife, Ashwini Rajkumar, shared a heartfelt post on her official X account (formerly Twitter), remembering the actor. Thanking his fans for keeping the memories alive, she wrote: “Fondly remembering #Appu on the 4th year…#DrPuneethRajkumar #FondRemembrance #PowerInU”, Eternal Gratitude To Everyone Who Has Kept Appu Alive In The Legacy Of Their Memories.” With several heartfelt comments from fans, Appu’s legacy continues till date.

Reliving his early life and memories, here are five lesser-known facts that remind us why Puneeth Rajkumar will always be our beloved Appu.

1. Faced the camera before he could even walk

Puneeth Rajkumar, was born on 17th March 1975 in the house of a legendary actor, Dr. Rajkumar, and Parvathamma Rajkumar. He was originally named Lohith. His parents often accompanied him on sets. 

When little Lohith was just a few months old, Dr. Rajkumar was shooting for his movie ‘Premada Kanike’ (1976) under the direction of V. Somashekhar. The production house was struggling to find a newborn baby required for an important scene in the movie. Since Puneeth was on set that day, Dr. Rajkumar, being a practical dad, gave permission to use Puneeth in that scene ,and that’s how the late actor made a debut in the cinematic world even before he could walk or talk.

2. He was once trained to become a singer before an actor

We all know how well Puneeth could sing but do you know that as a child, his father Dr. Rajkumar had enrolled him for classical music training? Yes, because Puneeth’s father wanted him to become a playback singer like his elder brother Shivarajkumar.

Puneeth often used to visit his father on his film’s sets where the filmmakers started noticing his natural screen presence. Years later, director Puri Jagannadh and producer Ashwini Dutt started looking for a fresh face with strong charisma and offered him the lead role in ‘Appu’ (2002). The blockbuster earned him the title of ‘Appu’ forever, transitioning his journey from a singer to an actor. 

3. Won National Award at age 10

Puneeth Rajkumar started working at a very early age. He achieved National Award for his acting in Bettada Hoovu around 1985. He was just 10 years old by then. According to his family, friends and old reports, Puneeth didn’t keep that money for himself and donated most of it towards educational and charitable causes.

He and his family is forever known for their generosity and social responsibility. His first act of kindness later changed into a lifelong habit, shaping him into the most compassionate star the Kannada industry has ever known.

4. He wanted to join the Indian Air Force

Long before entering into the acting world, when he was still a teenager, he was inspired by the discipline, courage and service of the Indian force. During an interview and family conversation, his mother Parvathamma Rajkumar had mentioned that Puneeth was fascinated by the fighter jets and their uniform. As a young boy, he expressed his dream of joining the Indian Air Force often.

Not only this, but he was also known to salute the Air Force officers on sets and often spoke about his admiration towards their patriotism, during his promotional events. Though life led him into the world of cinema but he carried the spirit of discipline and dedication throughout his life.

5. His secret charity works

Behind all the fame and fanfare, Puneeth Rajkumar was a man who believed that real charity needs no audience. From struggling students to families in need of medical support, he offered a helping hand to everyone, but secretly.

His charity acts came to light only after his passing, and many people revealed how he used to personally pay their education fees and surgeries. He also donated most of his profits to rural schools, all without ever letting his name be mentioned.

Puneeth’s greatest role was not only on screens that he played as an actor, but he was also a real-life hero. He often said, “If you need to do something for attention, then it’s not help but a show”. His selflessness made him a real superstar. Even after his passing, he continues to shine as his family, his wife Aswini Puneeth Rajkumar, carries forward most of his charitable causes. His story was never over, but it is being continued and lived by his fans.
