5. The Spirit of the Beehive
IMDB Ratings – 7.7/10

Ana befriends the anti-Francoist soldier and tries to help him. After he’s killed, she runs away and has an imaginary scene with a Frankenstein’s monster of her design. There must be some allegorical meanings here for life in the Francoist regime, but as an outsider with minuscule knowledge about the subject we later discover something new. The imagery of the beehive extends into the house itself with the hexagonal-patterned windows with a honey-coloured tint. The family is all one unit, yet are so completely separate, they never really communicate more than they tell people to do things. It’s such an elegant way of showing how things like a lack of communication or Franco’s regime will not only affect people directly.
4. All About My Mother
IMDb Rating – 7.8/10

When a teenage son dies, his mother returns to Barcelona in search of her husband. Manuela never stops being a mother, even when she is no longer one. She’s even a maternal figure to women her age or older. Wherever she goes, she is a caretaker. This film explores some of the most controversial themes. Though this story shows us the uncomfortable side of human life, it does not feel forced. When a movie has a lot of twists, it becomes confusing but this film has merged all the sides so perfectly that just upon first watch, you will understand the story fully.
3. Talk to Her
IMDB Ratings – 7.9/10

This movie depicts a greater meaning behind its story. The story revolves around two men who are taking care of two women who are in coma. The desires which the character portrays are a bit unnatural from a usual perspective. There is a sense of loneliness, and a deep solitude. The movie also deals with voyeurism and projecting fantasies upon the blank space. The characters are so intertwined within their desires that they don’t understand their own needs. Almodovar, director of this film, has creatively merged different themes. He is one of the few filmmakers in Spanish movies who is not afraid to touch the topic which most avoid.
2. The Sea Inside
IMDB Ratings – 8/10

Additionally, Ramon, played by Javier Bardem, has a young married attorney who fears that he will succumb to a condition he possesses that will leave him paralysed and unable to speak. He hopes they can change the law before he succumbs to such a fate. It’s a movie carried by the script and beautiful dialogues.

Final Thoughts
Some of the most daring stories come from Spanish movies. Almost all the films these days are strictly following the unspoken norms of not offending the audience. Spanish stories come out as unapologetically bold, and all in good light. Not only in this modern age, but since the 90s or maybe even before that, Spanish movies have always captivated audiences with their unique story telling. It’s only through movies one can deliver a message which the entire world will hear. The meaning behind these five movies are deep and moving.
When it comes to fictional stories, it has no boundaries and nothing takes better advantage of that like all the movies mentioned here. If you are also in a mood to binge something which will truly move you, pick any one of these movies and start right away.
