I am optimistic about the demand for housing in India. It also generates huge employment,&#8221; Mistry, vice-chairman and CEO of erstwhile HDFC said.<\/p><p>Mortgage lender <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/portal.tradebrains.in\/stock\/HDFCBANK\/consolidated\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HDFC<\/a><\/strong> has now been merged with HDFC Bank.<\/p><div class=\"trade-content_5\" id=\"trade-1311141501\"><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-4023722985638610\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- in_content_2_news -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-4023722985638610\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7925020301\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><\/div><p>Mistry said the penetration level of mortgage lending is very low in the country as compared to the US or China.<\/p><p>&#8220;Mortgage to GDP ratio is very low in India,&#8221; he said.<\/p><p>&#8220;The structural demand for housing in the country will always be strong,&#8221; Mistry said, adding that &#8220;housing loans are safe and have better credit risk profile&#8221;.<\/p><p>Regarding corporate governance (CG), Mistry said the role of independent directors needs to be strengthened.<\/p><p>&#8220;CG is the measure of how companies are run. Sound CG principles are necessary for long-term sustenance. This is why the role of independent directors needs to be strengthened,&#8221; he said.<\/p><p>&#8220;Good CG has a distinct advantage as investors are ready to pay a premium. More importantly, the role of independent directors is crucial as the business environment has become far more complex,&#8221; Mistry said.<\/p><div class=\"trade-content-10\" id=\"trade-1957884396\"><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-4023722985638610\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- in_content_3_news -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-4023722985638610\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"2969612066\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><\/div><p>The independent directors serve as a conduit between various stakeholders and the management, he said.<\/p><p>Besides CG, environment, social and governance (ESG) is also becoming important and boards of companies have recognised this.<\/p><p>Talking about the economy, he said India has now been in the spotlight as one of the fastest-growing economies in the world.<\/p><p>&#8220;In recent years, India&#8217;s growth surpassed expectations. Foreign investors are now acknowledging the country&#8217;s growth prospects.
