India&#8217;s foreign exchange reserve is also very high,&#8221; he told\u00a0PTI in an interview.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;India (Indian economy)\u00a0is in good shape,&#8221; Jalan added.<\/p><div class=\"trade-content_5\" id=\"trade-793512463\"><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-4023722985638610\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- in_content_2_news -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-4023722985638610\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7925020301\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><\/div>\n<p>Asia&#8217;s third-largest economy is projected to grow 8.9 per cent in 2021-22, according to recent government data. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has pegged the economic growth rate for 2022-23 at 7.8 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>The former RBI governor, however, stressed that unemployment is high, which is a matter\u00a0of concern.<\/p>\n<p>As the Russia-Ukraine crisis is concerned, Jalan said obviously, it will have an impact all over the world.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But so far India is concerned, its relationship\u00a0with Russia was quite good but exports-imports was not very much,&#8221; he said, adding that it was less than 2 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>While observing that development in Ukraine is a matter of concern, Jalan said it is not going to affect India&#8217;s economic performance.\u00a0 \tRussia started its military offensive against Ukraine on February 24. Western nations, including the US, have imposed major economic and various other sanctions on Russia following the offensive.<\/p>\n<p>Jalan noted that high inflation is a problem.<\/p><div class=\"trade-content-10\" id=\"trade-980215886\"><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-4023722985638610\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- in_content_3_news -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-4023722985638610\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"2969612066\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><\/div>\n<p>Retail inflation hit an eight-month high of 6.07 per cent in February, remaining above the RBI&#8217;s comfort level for the second month in a row, while wholesale price-based inflation soared to 13.11 per cent on account of the hardening of crude oil and non-food item prices.<\/p>\n<p>Asked should India use its foreign reserves for infrastructure as proposed by Union minister Nitin Gadkari, he said as far as infrastructure development is concerned, it has to be done in rupees.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Foreign exchange reserves have to be used for doing something in foreign exchange&#8230;if there is a shortage of money, then foreign exchange reserves can also be liquified,&#8221; he suggested.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding high petrol and diesel prices, Jalan said the government has already cut some taxes on petrol and diesel.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And some more taxes if they can reduce, (then) that is desirable,&#8221; the former RBI governor said.<\/p>\n<p>Rates of petrol and diesel are rising and vary from state to state depending upon the incidence of local taxation.
