People carry out protests throughout the country blaming the government for its mishandling of the economic crisis caused by the forex crisis.<\/p>\n<p> An analyst, who did not want to be named, said, &#8220;this is a unilateral debt suspension, not the outcome of negotiations with creditors or following consent solicitation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p> Sri Lanka\u2019s external debt servicing obligations were thought to be over USD 6 billion.<\/p>\n<p> In January, a USD 500 million sovereign bond payment was settled. In July another one-billion-dollar payment becomes due.<\/p>\n<p> WA Wijewardena, ex-deputy governor of the Central Bank, said the government was left with very low forex reserves and hence no available options.<\/p><div class=\"trade-content-10\" id=\"trade-4094306706\"><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-4023722985638610\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- in_content_3_news -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-4023722985638610\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"2969612066\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><\/div>\n<p> Yet the policy to suspend debt servicing could be reversed after an agreement with the IMF.<\/p>\n<p> Sri Lanka is facing its worst economic crisis since gaining independence from the UK in 1948.<\/p>\n<p> People have been protesting for weeks over lengthy power cuts and shortage of fuel, food and other daily essentials. They are demanding the resignation of the president.<\/p>\n<p> President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has defended his government&#8217;s actions, saying the foreign exchange crisis was not his making and the economic downturn was largely pandemic driven by the island nation\u2019s tourism revenue and inward remittances waning.
