Less than a year into his job as CEO, India-born Agrawal was ousted from the company by its new owner billionaire Elon Musk who on Thursday closed the 44 billion dollar deal to acquire the social media behemoth.<\/p><div class=\"trade-content_7\" style=\"margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;text-align: center;\" id=\"trade-3379243239\"><!-- Composite Start --> \r\n <div id=\"M923760ScriptRootC1549812\"> \r\n <\/div> \r\n <script src=\"https:\/\/jsc.mgid.com\/t\/r\/tradebrains.in.1549812.js\" async> \r\n <\/script> \r\n <!-- Composite End --><\/div>\n<p>An IIT Bombay and Stanford alumnus, Agrawal joined Twitter in 2011 when there were fewer than 1,000 employees. Rising in the company, he became Twitter\u2019s chief technology officer in 2017. Considered a protege of Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, Agrawal was appointed CEO of Twitter after Dorsey stepped down.<\/p>\n<p>In announcing his decision to step down and name Agrawal as CEO, Dorsey had said at the time \u201cmy trust in him as our CEO is bone deep.\u201d Dorsey had said that Agrawal had been his choice for CEO for \u201csome time given how deeply he understands the company and its needs. Parag has been behind every critical decision that helped turn this company around. He&#8217;s curious, probing, rational, creative, demanding, self-aware, and humble. He leads with heart and soul, and is someone I learn from daily.\u201d Ajmer-born Agrawal\u2019s ascent to the top job at Twitter put him in a steadily growing club of executives hailing from India helming global corporations, including Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai and Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen. Indra Nooyi had served as PepsiCo\u2019s CEO for 12 years before stepping down in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>According to a May 2022 article in The New York Times, if Musk removed him as chief executive, Agrawal could make USD 60 million, as per securities filings.<\/p><div class=\"trade-content_5\" id=\"trade-2633742321\"><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-4023722985638610\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- in_content_2_news -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-4023722985638610\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7925020301\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><\/div>\n<p>Agrawal\u2019s time as Twitter CEO was challenging and turbulent.<\/p>\n<p>Just a few months into the job as CEO, Musk came into the picture. A CNN Business report said that in March this year, Musk had met with Dorsey to \u201cdiscuss the future direction of social media,\u201d according to a company filing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the days that followed, Musk met with Twitter\u2019s board and some of its leadership team, including Agrawal; publicly announced that he\u2019d become Twitter\u2019s largest shareholder; and accepted a seat on the company\u2019s board,\u201d the CNN report said.<\/p>\n<p>Musk tweeted a few days later that \u201cIs Twitter dying?\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The CNN report added that according to a court filing in late September, Agrawal had texted Musk responding to his tweet.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You are free to tweet \u2018is Twitter dying?\u2019 or anything else about Twitter,\u201d Agrawal had said in the text to Musk \u201cbut it\u2019s my responsibility to tell you that it\u2019s not helping me make Twitter better in the current context. Next time we speak, I\u2019d like you to provide (your) perspective on the level of internal distraction right now and how [it\u2019s] hurting our ability to do work \u2026 I\u2019d like the company to get to a place where we are more resilient and don\u2019t get distracted, but we aren\u2019t there right now.\u201d Musk had responded to Agrawal saying: \u201cWhat did you get done this week?\u201d In two follow-up texts, he rescinded his agreement to join the board, saying, \u201cI\u2019m not joining the board. This is a waste of time.\u201d He added: \u201cWill make an offer to take Twitter private,\u201d according to the CNN article.<\/p><div class=\"trade-content-10\" id=\"trade-1268928604\"><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-4023722985638610\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- in_content_3_news -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-4023722985638610\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"2969612066\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><\/div>\n<p>On Agrawal\u2019s challenges to manage a &#8220;restive work force and deal with Twitter\u2019s mounting economic\u201d woes before likely being \u201cbooted\u201d from the company, The New York Times had quoted Bob Sutton, an organisational psychologist and professor at Stanford University, as saying that \u201cthere\u2019s no one in the world who would want to be in those shoes.\u201d The NYT article said that as Twitter\u2019s chief technology officer, Agrawal \u201cworked on some of Twitter\u2019s complicated technical challenges and built relationships with his engineering peers\u201d and Dorsey.<\/p>\n<p>He shared Dorsey\u2019s \u201cvision that Twitter\u2019s future hinged on overhauling its technology so it could rely more on machine learning and decentralize its services to give users more control over their experiences on the platform.\u201d As the Musk saga unfolded, the NYT said in the May 2022 article that at \u201ca virtual meeting for Twitter executives\u201d, Agrawal \u201cadmitted he was exhausted.\u201d \u201cAt the meeting, Mr Agrawal was \u201craw\u201d about Twitter\u2019s issues and the hurricane of attention over Mr Musk\u2019s deal, two people with knowledge of the event said. But he also conveyed a sense of acceptance of his situation and said he would move forward with his plans for the company, they said,\u201d the NYT report had said.<\/p>\n<p>When he was appointed CEO in 2021, Agrawal said in a note posted on Twitter that he was \u201chonoured and humbled\u201d on his appointment and expressed gratitude to Dorsey\u2019s \u201ccontinued mentorship and your friendship.\u201d \u201cWhile it was a decade ago, those days feel like yesterday to me. I&#8217;ve walked in your shoes, I&#8217;ve seen the ups and downs, the challenges and obstacles, the wins and the mistakes. But then and now, above all else, I see Twitter&#8217;s incredible impact, our continued progress, and the exciting opportunities ahead of us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur purpose has never been more important. Our people and our culture are unlike anything in the world. There is no limit to what we can do together.\u201d \u201cWe recently updated our strategy to hit ambitious goals, and I believe that strategy to be bold and right. But our critical challenge is how we work to execute against it and deliver results &#8211; that&#8217;s how we&#8217;ll make Twitter the best it can be for our customers, shareholders, and for each of you.\u201d \u201cThe world is watching us right now, even more than they have before. Lots of people are going to have lots of different views and opinions about today&#8217;s news. It is because they care about Twitter and our future, and it&#8217;s a signal that the work we do here matters,\u201d Agrawal said in his note last year.<\/p>\n<p>Agrawal is married to Vineeta Agarwala, a physician and adjunct clinical professor at Stanford Medicine.
