We know this is a challenging time for each person impacted,\u201d Nadella said in an email sent to employees.<\/p><p>Microsoft will take a USD 1.2 billion charge in the second quarter related to severance costs, changes to its hardware portfolio, and the cost of lease consolidation as the company creates higher density across its workspaces.<\/p><p>\u201cWe\u2019re also seeing organisations in every industry and geography exercise caution as some parts of the world are in a recession and other parts are anticipating one,\u201d Nadella said.<\/p><p>At the same time, Nadella noted that the next major wave of computing is being born with advances in Artificial Intelligence.<\/p><p>He said Microsoft will continue to invest in strategic areas for its future, allocating both capital and talent to areas of secular growth and long-term competitiveness for the company, while divesting in other areas.<\/p><p>\u201cThese are the kinds of hard choices we have made throughout our 47-year history to remain a consequential company in this industry that is unforgiving to anyone who doesn\u2019t adapt to platform shifts,\u201d he said.<\/p><div class=\"trade-content-10\" id=\"trade-4222033402\"><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-4023722985638610\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- in_content_3_news -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-4023722985638610\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"2969612066\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><\/div><p>Impacted employees will receive severance pay, continuing healthcare coverage for six months, continued vesting of stock awards for six months and 60 days\u2019 notice prior to termination.<\/p><p>The bloodbath in the tech sector that began last year is continuing into 2023 and Microsoft is the latest technology company to undertake huge lay-offs.<\/p><p>Meta, the parent of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp laid off more than 11,000 workers or about 13 per cent of its workforce in November.<\/p><p>\u201cI want to take accountability for these decisions and for how we got here.
