These old localities, from their ancient trading streets to the British Cantonment as well as the planned neighbourhoods have set the tone to the creation of the city that we know today. Other villages like <strong>Chickpet, Cottonpet, Balepet, Nagarathpet and Doddapete <\/strong>developed into prosperous trading centres. Basavanagudi<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Established in 1898,<\/strong> Basavanagudi is one of Bengaluru&#8217;s oldest planned residential neighbourhoods, <strong>developed after the plague epidemic.<\/strong> It is situated in <strong>South Bengaluru <\/strong>and is <strong>named after the popular Dodda Basavana Gudi (Bull Temple)<\/strong> and has several notable sites such as <strong>Gandhi Bazaar and Bugle Rock Park. <\/strong>With its tree-lined streets, heritage homes and vibrant cultural scene, Basavanagudi continues to be one of the city&#8217;s most sought-after residential localities while retaining its old-world charm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-malleswaram\" style=\"font-size:22px\"><strong>3. Malleswaram<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Malleswaram was <strong>established in 1889,<\/strong> as a planned extension to the town of Basavanagudi after the plague hit. Rajagopalachari (Rajaji), with wide roads, parks and organised residential blocks. Gandhi Bazaar<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Gandhi Bazaar is one of the most iconic traditional markets in Bengaluru, which came up as a<strong> part of the Basavanagudi extension<\/strong> in the early part of the <strong>20th century. <\/strong>Located in<strong> South Bengaluru, <\/strong>it is renowned for its flower, fruit and vegetable markets, age-old eateries and festive atmosphere. The Gandhi Bazaar still stands today as a <strong>lively cultural and commercial landmark,<\/strong> retaining the ambiance of the old city of Bengaluru and catering to the generations who have passed by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-do-older-neighbourhoods-perform-better-than-newer-layouts\" style=\"font-size:22px\"><strong>Why do older neighbourhoods perform better than newer layouts?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Though there is a lot of development going on in the outskirts of Bengaluru, a number of the historic areas still have some benefits which the newer neighbourhoods have yet to catch up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Drainage systems:<\/strong> Older &#8220;localities&#8221; were laid out with a good stormwater drainage system and are typically less prone to flooding than many newly constructed areas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reliable water supply: <\/strong>Water connections in established neighbourhoods have been in place for a long time and this decreases the need for private tankers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Organised layouts:<\/strong> Well laid out roads, as well as separate civic spaces make these areas easier to navigate and less chaotic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Planned infrastructure: <\/strong>Schools, hospitals, markets, parks and public transport services are all very well established, as opposed to many developing suburbs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Abundant greenery: <\/strong>Decades-old trees offer more shade, lower temperatures and a more pleasant environment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Excellent connectivity:<\/strong> proximity to the Central Business District, Metro stations and major roads which helps to minimise commute time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-conclusion\" style=\"font-size:22px\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bengaluru&#8217;s oldest neighbourhoods like the Pete area, Basavanagudi and Malleswaram have survived years of development.
