Each co-owner will be able to claim a deduction of \u20b92,00,000 for each year based on the interest paid on self-occupied property. However, the tax loss adjusted against other income (like salary) is limited to \u20b92,00,000 per person in a year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-section-80c-deduction-for-principal-repayment\" style=\"font-size:18px\"><strong>2) Section 80C: Deduction for Principal Repayment<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Under Section 80C, taxpayers can use the principal payment of home-loan EMIs as a deduction. Each spouse can claim a deduction of up to \u20b9150,000 for these payments against their individual 80C limits. However, the property must meet certain conditions to qualify for deductions against the principal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To qualify for deductions against the principal, the following requirements must be met:<\/strong><\/p><div class=\"trade-content-2\" style=\"margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;text-align: center;\" id=\"trade-4287363316\"><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/tradebrains.in\/get\/voltmoney\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" aria-label=\"LAMF3 300_250 (1)\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tradebrains-wp.s3.ap-south-1.amazonaws.com\/money\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/LAMF3-300_250-1.png\" alt=\"\"  width=\"300\" height=\"250\"   \/><\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The house must be complete;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The taxpayer must be co-owner of the house;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The deduction is for principal repayment only and does not include interest or other related fees.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any deduction claimed for principal on the property will become taxable if the property is sold within five years of being taken possession of.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-section-80ee-deductions-with-conditions\" style=\"font-size:18px\"><strong>3) Section 80EE &#8211; Deductions with conditions<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Individuals will receive an additional \u20b950,000 (per person) interest deduction for first time home purchasers through Section 80EE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To qualify for the above additional deductions, individuals must meet the following qualifications:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They must be first time home purchasers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The home loan must be within the prescribed limit of \u20b91,000,000, and the property must be valued at \u20b91,000,000 or less.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A spouse is allowed to claim an additional deduction on their individual basis if they meet the above qualifications, in a joint loan. The additional deductions under Section 80EE are tacked on to the \u20b92,000,000 limit imposed under Section 24(b).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-common-mistakes-married-couples-make\" style=\"font-size:22px\"><strong>Common mistakes married couples make<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keeping the property on one spouse\u2019s name while taking a joint loan, this blocks tax benefits for the other spouse.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Claiming deductions as a couple if only one spouse makes a payment;
