Let\u2019s take an example to understand,<\/p><div class=\"trade-content\" style=\"margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;text-align: center;\" id=\"trade-4044880678\"><div translate=\"no\" class='mailmunch-forms-widget-1169732'><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Case-1:<\/strong> If <strong>an individual<\/strong> incurred \u20b980,000 in medical expenses and received \u20b930,000 from an insurer, <strong>Claim amount<\/strong> = Maximum Deduction or Expenses (whichever is lower) &#8211; Reimbursement from other sources = \u20b940,000 &#8211; \u20b930,000\u00a0= <strong>\u20b910,000<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>senior citizen<\/strong> in the same situation, <strong>Claim amount<\/strong> = Maximum Deduction or Expenses (whichever is lower) &#8211; Reimbursement from other sources = \u20b980,000 &#8211; \u20b930,000 = <strong>\u20b950,000<\/strong><\/p><div class=\"trade-content-2\" style=\"margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;text-align: center;\" id=\"trade-1365891136\"><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/tradebrains.in\/get\/voltmoney\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" aria-label=\"LAMF3 300_250 (1)\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tradebrains-wp.s3.ap-south-1.amazonaws.com\/money\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/LAMF3-300_250-1.png\" alt=\"\"  width=\"300\" height=\"250\"   \/><\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Case-2:<\/strong> If a taxpayer spent \u20b980,000 and received \u20b960,000 from an insurer he will <strong>not be eligible to claim,<\/strong> Reimbursement from other sources > Maximum Deduction Threshold (that is, \u20b940,000)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, <strong>a senior citizen<\/strong> in the same situation can claim, <strong>Claim amount<\/strong> = Maximum Deduction or Expenses (whichever is lower) &#8211; Reimbursement from other sources\u00a0= \u20b980,000 &#8211; \u20b960,000 <strong>= \u20b920,000<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-diseases-covered-under-section-80ddb-rule-11dd\" style=\"font-size:22px\"><strong>Diseases Covered Under Section 80DDB (Rule 11DD)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Section 80DDB refers to <strong>Rule 11DD<\/strong> of the Income Tax Rules, which lists the specific diseases and ailments that are covered under it. The list is comprehensive and is updated by the CBDT from time to time to include relevant critical illnesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Neurological Diseases- Dementia, Dystonia, Musculorum Deformans, Motor Neuron Disease, Ataxia, Chorea, Hemiballismus, Aphasia, Parkinson\u2019s Disease, with the disability level certified at 40% or more.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All forms of malignant cancers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Full-blown Acquired Immuno-Deficience Syndrome (AIDS)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chronic Renal Failure, and the condition which is covered under this section is requiring dialysis or transplant.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Haematological Disorders- Haemophilia, and Thalassaemia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-required-specialist-certificate\" style=\"font-size:22px\"><strong>Required Specialist Certificate<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A CBDT Notification vide S.O. No. 2791(E) dated 12th October 2015 amended Rule 11DD, relaxing the requirement of obtaining a certificate from a specialist working in a Government hospital. The prescription can now be issued by any qualified specialist, and it is no longer mandatory to obtain it from a Government hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For neurological diseases, the prescription must be issued by a Neurologist holding a Doctorate of Medicine (D.M.) degree in Neurology or an equivalent degree recognised by the Medical Council of India. For cancer, an Oncologist is required, similarly for chronic renal failure, a Urologist, for haematological disorders, a Haematologist and for AIDS, an Immunologist.
