India faced a major scare during the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, when captain Shubman Gill suffered a sudden neck injury and had to be taken to the hospital. The incident not only ruled him out of the remainder of the match but has also created uncertainty around his availability for the second Test in Guwahati.
What Happened to Shubman Gill?
On Day 2 of the Kolkata Test, Gill faced only three balls before the injury occurred. After hitting a boundary off Simon Harmer, he immediately grabbed the back of his neck in pain. His discomfort was severe enough that he had to retire hurt and was eventually stretchered off the field.
The BCCI soon confirmed that Gill would take no further part in the Test match, and scans were conducted at a local hospital to understand the nature of the injury. This also meant India had to play the remainder of the match without their captain, adding to the pressure of an already tough contest.
Current Situation: What Is the Latest Update?
Injury Type: Gill is suffering from a neck spasm, not a fracture, a relief for India, but still serious enough to require careful treatment.
Hospitalised and Discharged: He was admitted for medical examination, treated, and later discharged from the hospital. He has since returned to the team hotel in Kolkata.
Condition Now
He is currently stable and able to walk and move, though with reduced discomfort. However, he is still under strict medical supervision as the pain continues, especially during movement. His neck mobility has not fully improved yet, and doctors are closely monitoring his progress to ensure steady recovery.
According to various medical experts quoted in reports, recovery from a neck spasm usually takes two to five days, depending on severity. But with a Test match coming up soon, the time frame is tight.
Will Gill Play the Second Test in Guwahati?
Gill may not travel with the team to Guwahati: Reports suggest that even though he has been discharged, he might not fly with the team due to discomfort and the strain that air travel could put on his neck.

Availability still uncertain
With the second Test starting on November 22, Gill’s availability is still 50–50. The BCCI’s medical team will monitor:
- His neck movement
- Pain response
- Ability to bat for long periods
- Whether he can field for extended sessions
If there is any risk of aggravation, he might be rested. India cannot afford further injuries with a crucial World Test Championship cycle underway, which makes this decision even more important.
What’s Next for India?
If Gill misses the second Test:
- India will need a stand-in captain
- The batting order will have to be reshuffled
- The pressure increases after the defeat in Kolkata, especially since WTC points are extremely valuable
Given India’s current WTC position, the team needs stability and losing the captain ahead of a must-win match is far from ideal. The selectors and team management are already preparing for both possibilities: Gill plays, or Gill is ruled out.
