The South African wicketkeeper-batter, Heinrich Klaasen who is currently playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), is most likely to be released ahead of the upcoming IPL mini-auction, according to reports. The decision comes as SRH looks to review its team balance and spending.

Klaasen’s journey with SRH

Klaasen joined SRH in 2023 and quickly became one of their most reliable power-hitters. Known for his clean ball-striking and ability to dominate spin, the 34-year-old South African has been a standout performer for the franchise.

Klaasen scored 487 runs in 13 innings at a strike rate of 172.7, it also included a few match-winning knocks in IPL 2025. His aggressive style made him one of the most feared middle-order batters in the league. Because of his strong performances, SRH had retained him for a hefty ₹23 crore before the season, one of the highest salaries among overseas players.

Why SRH may let him go

Regardless of Klassen’s individual success, Sunrisers Hyderabad experienced another inconsistent IPL campaign, finishing outside the playoff spots. According to some reports, the franchise management, which is led by Kavya Maran, is looking to restructure the team and free up purse funds ahead of the next auction.

If SRH release Klaasen it would give them an additional ₹23 crore in the auction purse, which they could use to strengthen other areas such as spin bowling and all-round options. Sources close to the team say the management feels the side has been too dependent on a few batters and needs a better overall balance.

A senior IPL insider mentioned by Times of India said that SRH might also try to re-sign Klaasen at a lower price if he goes back into the auction pool, a common strategic move used by franchises to manage budgets while retaining key players.

Multiple teams keeping an eye

With Klaasen’s potential release, several franchises are reportedly monitoring the situation closely. His proven ability to finish games and counter both pace and spin makes him a valuable asset, especially for teams searching for a middle-order wicketkeeper-batter.

While no official names have been confirmed, teams like Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are said to be keeping tabs, given their need for an aggressive middle-order player who can also take on the gloves.

What happens next

The final list of retained and released players is expected to be announced later this month, before the mini-auction in December 2025. SRH’s final call on Klaasen will depend on internal discussions about team strategy, purse balance, and possible replacements.

If Klassen gets released, he will enter the auction as one of the most in-demand overseas players, almost certain to attract multiple bids thanks to his strong record in both IPL and international T20 cricket.
