The all new Gen4 car will be raced in the 2026-27 season of Formula E. The jaw dropping quick new Gen4 car will hope to gain an attraction in the audience and viewership to the motorsport.

Formula E has unveiled its new Gen4 electric car, an ambitious development yet. The car goes from 0-60mph in just 1.8 seconds. That’s quicker off the line than a Formula 1 car. The car is set to debut in the 2026-27 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, being the next evolution of motorsport.

The first season of Formula E established a new paradigm for motorsport and demonstrated that it could be competitive and efficient in motor racing. The introduction of electric racing cars in the competition was initially treated as a curiosity by the fans.

The cars were efficient, but the fans would go bonkers for the speed and the engine screams of the v8 and v12 engines in the Formula 1 cars and that’s what the electric cars lacked.

It is now a proving ground for boosting EV awareness and technology, the viability of electric cars and the foundation laid for the future advancements in racing. With the all new Gen4 stepping into the industry, Formula E might have just stepped out of F1’s shadow.

A big development for electric motorsports

The Gen4 is the fastest car ever produced in the motorsport industry. With 600 Kw of power equivalent to 814 horsepower. The car also features an all-wheel drive activation throughout the race. The car is also introduced with an advanced aerodynamics with two setups: a high-downforce mode for qualifying, and a low-drag configuration for race conditions, dubbed Attack Mode. This will propel the car to go up to a top speed of 350 kilometers an hour.

Similarly to DRS, Formula E has an attack mode that helps the car in making a powerful overtake at certain checkpoints on the track along with their regenerative braking at 700 Kw. This makes the car recover energy so efficiently at 40% of the car’s power. The energy capacity has also been increased to 55kWh, opening the door to more aggressive race strategies.

Will Formula E step out of Formula 1’s shadow?

The latest leap of the Formula E car development could be the moment where the motorsport grabs a broader attention of the audience.

“Much-maligned by some racing naysayers, I think Gen4 might be the machine that propels Formula E closer to the mainstream, given the huge jump in speeds,” said Jack Oliver Smith, deputy editor of Motorsport Week. “The rapid lap times these cars are expected to clock, and the technology that has gone into this, will undoubtedly attract those interested in the sustainability aspect, but also the general racing purists who may have dismissed Formula E in the past.”

For a sport that has long been seen as the future of racing, Gen4 might just be the car that finally brings it into the present.
