Daryl Mitchell’s remarkable performance in the New Zealand cricket team has faced a setback just when the team is preparing for its ODI series against the West Indies. Daryl Mitchell, after scoring an outstanding hundred in the first game at Hagley Oval, Christchurch, felt a discomfort in his thigh during the innings.
He was injured before the 2nd ODI which is on 19th November, and a doctor’s scan later revealed a small tear in the groin, requiring about two weeks of recovery and ruling out his participation in the series final matches.
Rob Walter, the coach, recognized the team’s setback, stating that it is disappointing to lose Mitchell who was in “hot form,” but the bright side is, the injury’s short duration, allowing him to play in the next Test series starting on December 2. Mitchell’s place will be taken by Henry Nicholls, who was already called up as cover for the second ODI, retained for the rest of the series. Nicholls has excellent domestic performance and brings the required experience to cover the gap created.

This turn of events is very important for New Zealand’s white-ball plans. Mitchell has been the one of the leading players in the ODI format this summer and now the team will have only limited options regarding the batting order and as a contributor with multiple roles.
Nevertheless, the forthcoming matches will provide Nicholls with a great opportunity for his rise, but at this point of the series, the team would surely lose Mitchell’s flow and self-confidence.
Fortunately, the situation is such that Mitchell’s injury coincides with the period when he would need to be off the field in order to recover for the Test series against West Indies. Besides that, his talent might still be advantageous for the longer format part of the tour. The main concerns for both fans and analysts are how New Zealand will cope with his absence in the rest of the ODIs and if Nicholls will be able to perform up to the expectations.
To sum up, Daryl Mitchell’s injury is a drawback but not a major issue in the long run. The Black Caps will rely on Nicholls to support the batting in the short run and will wait for Mitchell’s complete recovery for the more extended Test challenge.
