New Zealand has made public a squad of 14 players for the upcoming home series of five T20I matches with the West Indies, and the selection includes some returning players but also excludes some very notable players.

The main returns include: fast bowler Kyle Jamieson has made it to the set-up again after unit side strain, while leg-spinner Ish Sodhi is joining the squad for spin department reinforcement. Their presence is a hint that New Zealand is looking to mix and match before the mega tournaments.

But the squad also shows the absence of quite a few: important players such as Finn Allen (foot injury), Lockie Ferguson (hamstring), Glenn Phillips (groin) and Ben Sears (hamstring) are all out of action for this series.

New Zealand squad

Mitchell Santner (c), Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Zak Foulkes, Kyle Jamieson, Daryl Mitchell, Jimmy Neesham, Rachin Ravindra, Tim Robinson, Tim Seifert (wk), Nathan Smith, Ish Sodhi.

This series is significant for New Zealand as they face the West Indies, who are a risky rival, in all five T20 matches, hence they can prepare their lineup before the big competitions. Coach Rob Walter called it “the opportunity to try out the different combinations and to work on the next World Cup.”

The supporters of New Zealand will certainly keep an eye on this team as they start a home T20 series, which could very likely establish the plan for their white-ball cricket in the next cycle.
