Shreyas Iyer has picked up a left rib injury while fielding during India’s recent tour of Australia. Because of this, he might miss the start of India’s ODI series against South Africa, which begins on November 30 in Ranchi.
Shreyas Iyer had dangerously low body vitals after the fall and was rushed to the hospital in the situation which was life threatening at that moment. It is also learnt that Shreyas Iyer could have suffered a splenic rupture and it caused the internal bleeding. Currently he in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a Sydney hospital
It is understood that he was not in a good position in the dressing room and was swiftly rushed to the hospital after his blood pressure dropped to alarmingly low levels.
What Happened
In the third ODI of the Australia tour, Iyer dived to take a catch of Alex Carey and landed heavily on his left side, resulting in a zap to his rib area. He was immediately carried off and later admitted to hospital in Sydney for scans, with preliminary reports showing a “jerk” to the rib-cage region.
Medical staff have indicated that the injury could sideline Iyer for a minimum of three weeks. If these initial estimates hold true, that timeline would leave him just enough window to recover but even then, fitness clearance and match readiness remain uncertain.
As one BCCI source stated: “If it is a hairline fracture then it might take longer.”
Progress and What’s Next
Upon his return to India, Iyer is scheduled to undergo further assessment at the National Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. The national selectors are already examining alternatives, should he not be fit for the opener. Names such as Sanju Samson and Rinku Singh are under consideration for the middle order, or a reshuffle with KL Rahul moving up the batting slot.
Iyer had been back among the runs in Australia, scoring 61 in the second ODI after recovering from a prior back issue, this injury now threatens to halt his momentum at a critical time.

Implications
If Iyer misses the series, India will have to play without their new ODI vice-captain. This could disturb the team’s batting order and affect their leadership plans. The timing is unfortunate, given the board’s confidence in Iyer as a future white-ball leader.
