Jemimah Rodrigues, a women’s cricketer, made the entire nation proud by helping Team India reach the highest successful total ever achieved in World Cup history. Her match-winning innings of 127 against Australia led India into the 2025 World Cup final. Jemimah transformed the word “impossible” into “I am possible.”
Early Life & Childhood
Jemimah Jessica Rodrigues came into the world on the 5th of September 2000 in Bhandup, Mumbai. Her parents later shifted their base to Bandra West so that she and her siblings could have better access to sports.
Her father Ivan Rodrigues was a junior cricket coach at her school and through him, Jemimah received the first step in her career development. He was the one who created the girls’ cricket team at the school, trained her when she was very young, and helped her to grow her sportsmanship all around.
Jemimah was not only into cricket she even played hockey for Maharashtra in the under-17 and under-19 categories. But the incident that influenced her future in cricket took place in 2011: she was just an infant of 10 when India won the World Cup (men’s) on 2 April 2011. Living right next door to Sachin Tendulkar that night and witnessing the celebrations, she got a perfect idea of what cricket meant to the country and her neighbors. That incident made her a serious player for the sport.
Another significant occasion was when the Indian women’s team made it to the final of the 2017 Women’s World Cup. Jemimah went to Mumbai airport to welcome them and the whole experience made her more determined to turn her dreams into reality.
Early Struggles & Rise
Jemimah’s progression from the maidans of Mumbai was slow but surely attended with labor. At the age of 13 she was already a member of the Maharashtra under-19 cricket team, a remarkable achievement for such young talent.
Her early years were spent in long hours of training with her father, in the backyard nets of Mumbai’s congested streets, and juggling between school (St Joseph’s Convent High School, Mumbai) and cricket.
It was then she decided to go completely with cricket by leaving hockey behind, and this decision started to reap rewards. In domestic cricket she didn’t just bat, she made news: In November 2017, she scored 202* in 163 balls in a one-day match for Mumbai against Saurashtra, thereby becoming the second woman after Smriti Mandhana to hit a double century in a one-day match.
International Breakthrough & Style
Jemimah’s Indian T20I encounter happened on February 13, 2018, against South Africa, and her first ODI was on March 12, 2018, against Australia. Jemimah is a right-handed batsman whose style is both graceful and strong.
She has a wide variety of strokes, perfect timing, and the capacity to either slow down or quicken the pace of the game according to the situation. Occasionally, she also bowls right-arm off-breaks.
At the same time, she has also played in overseas leagues over the years: for WBBL, The Hundred, WPL, etc. Her participation in these leagues has been a big advantage in terms of her exposure and skill development.
