Synopsis: Tether purchased 8,888 BTC worth ₹7,000 crore, pushing total holdings above 96,000 Bitcoin as part of its strategy allocating 15% quarterly profits to cryptocurrency reserves.
The world’s largest stablecoin issuer has strengthened its crypto reserves with another major purchase. Tether kicked off 2026 by adding 8,888.88 BTC to its treasury wallet. This move pushed its total holdings above 96,000 Bitcoin, worth roughly ₹7,000 crore. The acquisition follows Tether’s established strategy of channeling quarterly profits into Bitcoin. CEO Paolo Ardoino confirmed the purchase on social media platforms.
Strategic Profit Allocation
Tether introduced its Bitcoin buying policy in May 2023. The company commits up to 15% of quarterly profits toward acquiring the cryptocurrency. This systematic approach transformed Tether from a casual buyer into a steady accumulator.
The strategy allows diversification without touching assets backing USDT stablecoin liabilities. On the other hand, Tether generates operating profits primarily from short-term U.S. Treasuries and repos. Higher interest rates and strong stablecoin demand translate directly into bigger Bitcoin purchases.
The Q4 2025 acquisition demonstrates consistency in execution. Tether bought exactly 8,888 BTC in three separate quarters throughout 2025. The repetition of this specific number carries cultural weight. In Asian markets, the number 8 symbolizes prosperity and good fortune. However, this pattern goes beyond symbolism. It reflects a disciplined treasury management approach that prioritizes regular accumulation over market timing.
Tether Among Top Bitcoin Whales
The latest purchase brought Tether’s total reserves to over 96,000 BTC. At current valuations, this represents approximately ₹76,500 crore in Bitcoin holdings. Blockchain data confirms Tether now ranks as the fifth-largest Bitcoin holder globally. The company trails only major exchanges and ETF providers in total holdings. Its primary treasury wallet address ranks second among private corporate treasuries.
Consequently, Tether’s accumulation strategy continues building substantial market influence. The company began purchasing Bitcoin in September 2022 as part of reserve diversification. Since then, holdings have grown from modest initial purchases to a massive corporate treasury. This positions Tether alongside other institutional whales in the cryptocurrency market.
Purchase Comes During Challenging Market Conditions
The Q4 acquisition occurred amid difficult market dynamics. Bitcoin traded around ₹73,000 to ₹74,000 during the purchase period. This represented a decline of over 23% for the quarter. Despite bearish sentiment and thinning liquidity, Tether proceeded with its planned allocation. Other institutional buyers had pulled back from accumulation during this period.
Nevertheless, Tether’s transaction signals confidence in long-term value preservation. The company transferred Bitcoin from Bitfinex exchange to its reserve wallet on December 31, 2025. Public blockchain records provide full transparency for the transaction. This contrarian buying during weakness demonstrates commitment to the established strategy.
Broader Reserve Strategy Includes Multiple Assets
Bitcoin represents just one component of Tether’s diversification approach. The company holds over ₹8,29,400 crore in U.S. Treasury securities. This makes Tether one of the top 20 largest holders globally. Additionally, Tether accumulated 116 tons of gold by Q3 2025. The gold reserves alone are worth approximately ₹42,500 to ₹51,000 crore.
Furthermore, Tether maintains investments in emerging technology sectors. The company has allocated capital to artificial intelligence platforms and robotics ventures. This multi-asset approach balances traditional financial instruments with alternative assets. USDT remains fully backed by these diversified reserves. The quarterly Bitcoin purchases come exclusively from excess profits, not from stablecoin backing.
