Arun Khetarpal: The Real Hero
Arun was born in Pune to a highly distinguished military family which shaped his outlook in the traditions of service and sacrifice. As he already came from the house of defence personnel he soon started attending the National Defence Academy. After completing there, he was commissioned into the 17 Poona Horse battalion. The tragedy hit in the year of 1971 when Khetarpal and his unit were tasked with establishing a critical bridgehead. In the Indo-Pakistan war, specifically the Battle of Basantar, his troops faced immense enemy resistance and perilous odds. Khetarpal held his ground by destroying multiple enemy tanks which included ten in a single engagement.
He was wounded deeply during the firefight and was ordered by his superior to abandon the tank. However, he refused to abandon his position and thus famously told his commander, “No Sir, I will not abandon my tank. My gun is still working and I will get these bastards.” His decision to hold ground and fight to his last breath made a crucial breakthrough and eventually led to India’s advantage in the conflict. At just 21 years of age, Khetarpal became the youngest person awarded the Param Vir Chakra posthumously.
