Summary Red Chillies Entertainment counters Sameer Wankhede’s defamation suit over The Ba**ds of Bollywood and calling it protected satire not a Cordelia cruise documentary. While Wankhede alleges a character targets him personally seeking ₹2 crore damages for reputational harm.

Shah Rukh Khan’s production house – Red Chillies Entertainment – has firmly countered a defamation claim by former Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) officer Sameer Wankhede arguing in the Delhi High Court that its web series The Ba***ds of Bollywood is a work of “situational satire” and fiction not a documentary about the controversial 2021 Cordelia cruise incident.

The legal battle pits Wankhede who led the high-profile drug bust that resulted in the arrest and eventual release of Aryan Khan against the production company owned by the superstar father.

Red Chillies: A Farce Not a Fact-Based Re-enactment

In the recent court arguments the counsel for Red Chillies Entertainment asserted that the web series—available on Netflix and reportedly directed by Aryan Khan—uses exaggeration and imaginative occurrences to critique general issues within the film industry. They also added that they have used sensationalism and media scrums as a method of direction rather than targeting Wankhede specifically.

We do not show a documentary on the Cordelia cruise incident. I am inspired by overzealous officers. That is far from saying that this is the Cordelia cruise story,” the production house’s counsel stated in court and emphasized on the show’s fictional nature.

The defense also leaned into legal protections surrounding artistic expression arguing that as a form of satire the series is protected speech. They further argued that Wankhede as a public official should expect some level of scrutiny and “must not be overly thin-skinned” about on-screen portrayals.

Sameer Wankhede Alleges a “Hit Job”

Wankhede filed the defamation suit against the production house for ₹2 crore in damages which he would donate to a cancer hospital. He argues that the series is a conscious and a “calculated hit job” that is designed to tarnish his reputation following the investigation he led.

Wankhede also claims that a specific antagonist in the show is intentionally painted after him and shares striking physical similarities and mannerisms. He added that this character is consistently shown in a negative light and claims one scene even violates national honor laws by showing a character making an obscene gesture after reciting the slogan “Satyamev Jayate” (Truth Alone Triumphs).

The former officer points to the timing and context of the show as proof of a “personal vendetta disguised as satire.”

What is the Cordelia Cruise Incident?

The ongoing legal battle circles back to the turbulent history between the two parties. Back in the October of 2021 NCB raid on the Cordelia cruise ship in October 2021 led to the arrest of Aryan Khan and several others.

The case gained massive national attention and the media houses covered both sides of the story. After around three weeks NCB’s special investigation team later dropped all charges against Aryan Khan due to lack of sufficient evidence.

Simultaneously, Wankhede himself faces an ongoing FIR from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) related to allegations of extortion and corruption surrounding the handling of the cruise ship case—a fact Red Chillies has used to argue that Wankhede’s reputation was already subject to “public ridicule and adverse commentary” before the series aired.

What Happens Next to Aryan Khan?

The defamation case over The Ba***ds of Bollywood still remains ongoing. Red Chillies has strictly maintained their stance that the series is a protected work of satire and not a documentary.

On the other hand Wankhede insists the portrayal amounts to a personal vendetta disguised as satire thus seeking ₹2 crore in damages. The court’s decision will have important implications for the boundaries of satire and creative expression in Indian OTT content.

Before the court releases any decision it is best for the fans to wait and not jump into any conclusion themselves.
