After decades of fan requests and nostalgia for the adventurer-horror classic, Hollywood’s favorite on-screen duo, Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are finally in talks to return for a brand-new Mummy movie.

While the project hasn’t been officially announced, early reports suggest it will revive the beloved O’Connell adventure spirit that made the first two films iconic. Whether it’s titled The Mummy 4 or something new, fans are already thrilled to see Rick and Evelyn O’Connell possibly back in action.

The directors Matt Bettinelli Olphin and Tyler Gillett, aka Radio Silence, along with the screenwriter David Coggeshal are reportedly busy developing the next chapter with Universal Pictures. The film will serve as a direct continuation of the story shown in the previous movie, The Mummy Returns (2001).

Where was the Mummy team all these years?

Following the success of the Mummy franchise in 1999, both stars took a different turn in their careers. Brendan Fraser stepped out from the spotlight due to personal struggles and health issues that occurred after years of heavy stunts. He made an emotional comeback with ‘The Whale’ which later earned him an Oscar in 2023.

Rachel Weisz, on the other hand, got busy with more independent projects after getting married to Daniel Craig. She earned critical acclaim for her performance in The Constant Gardener and The Favourite.

On the other side, the production and directing team were struggling to reboot their ‘Dark Universe’, and the release of The Mummy (2017) featuring Tom Cruise ultimately flopped. The studio took a break to figure out how to recapture the magic of the original, which does not feel outdated.

Are they officially back?

There has been no official statement/announcement claiming the ongoing gossips but the recent clues has set the internet on fire.

Brandon Fraser and Rachel Weisz were mentioned together in the early 2025 industry reports. Soon after the buzz, the insiders noticed that Fraser’s team had been in touch with Universal’s ‘classic revival slate’ for a new action-adventure, and Weisz’s name also appeared on the same production notes.

Multiple trusted media sources like: Entertainment Weekly, People, and The Independent, started reporting that the duo were ‘in talks to reunite.’

Since then, X has been buzzing with fans’ posts and trending hashtags of #TheMummyReturnsAgain and #RickyAndEvyForever. Fans are also connecting this to Fraser’s red carpet interview where he said that ‘he’d love to dust off Rick’s boots one more time.’

About the movie

The Mummy franchise has been in the list of Hollywood’s most loved adventure sagas, incorporating all the elements of history and horror with a pinch of old-school humor.

The journey began in 1999 with Stephen Sommers’ Mummy starring Brendan and Weisz. The film became a global hit and the stars on-screen chemistry ended up in 2001 sequel as Mummy Returns.

However, in The Mummy: The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008), the movie lost its spark, and the audience didn’t quite like the replacement of Weisz with Bello. Later, an attempt to recreate the franchise with Tom Cruise’s The Mummy failed abruptly.

Since then fans have been waiting for the return of the original cast and longing for the mythological adventure. That’s why the idea of Mummy 4 with the return of the OG characters feels like a cinematic magic.

While Universal has not spoken on this matter yet but the entertainment insiders hint for a release around 2026. Mummy 4 won’t simply be another sequel but it’s a revival of an era.

Wishing the Mummy to rise again!
