Dividends have been a passive source of income for many. Investors make money from dividends, irrespective of the market condition, even when stocks are trading sideways or are showing a downward trend.

The ex-date and the record date are two significant dates when it comes to dividends or any other corporate action. The ex-date sequentially comes before the record date. Investors who want to be eligible to receive dividends have to buy shares before the ex-date so that these shares get credited to their accounts by the record date.
