One of the flagship welfare programs in Karnataka, the Gruha Jyothi Scheme provides domestic electricity consumers with up to 200 units of free electricity per month, thereby lowering their electricity bills. The scheme has been in the news again as the government has introduced a scheme beneficiary verification exercise to ensure that the subsidy reaches only eligible households and to ensure that the beneficiaries are real.

Gruha Jyothi Scheme

The scheme was launched by the Government of Karnataka in June, 2023 as one of its flagship welfare initiatives to cut down the electricity bills of households. Free Electricity to eligible domestic consumers of up to 200 units per month. The scheme is applicable only to one domestic electricity connection per household. It covers consumers under Karnataka’s Electricity Supply Companies (ESCOMs), covering more than 1.5 crore consumers in the state. The scheme is designed to relieve the financial strain on families, and help to increase access to cheaper electricity.

Latest update or actions taken

  • The Karnataka government has initiated a door-to-door verification process in the entire state to verify beneficiaries of the Gruha Jyothi Scheme and weed out ineligible claims. The exercise started on 1 July 2026 in all ESCOM jurisdictions.
  • To ensure accuracy of the information, verification teams are visiting households to verify information including identity, address, occupancy (owner or tenant), electricity connection, etc. before subsidy is to be continued.
  • The move is to reduce the duplicate, fake or ineligible beneficiaries and make sure that the free electricity benefit reaches the real households.
  • The Energy Department has also said that the exercise is not meant to phase out the scheme, but to correct the records of the beneficiaries and enhance the implementation of the scheme.

  • Both tenants and homeowners can take advantage of the benefit.

  • If someone is determined to be ineligible or doesn’t go through the verification process and misses the free electricity subsidy, they may be required to pay the entire monthly power bill.
  • Consumer groups have also warned that those who may benefit will experience some temporary disruptions if the documents attached were of the previous tenant.

Conclusion

Now that the government is conducting their verification drive all over the country, those who are eligible to receive the subsidy should make sure they keep their documents and household information updated so that they continue to collect the subsidy without having to miss out.
