Route Alignment

The bypass will run through several villages and localities around Thiruvarur, keeping highway traffic away from the town’s commercial core. Key points along the alignment include,

  • Athipuliyur and Andipalayam
  • Kidaramkondan and Pallivaramangalam
  • Perumpugalur and Elavangarkudi
  • Anaivadapathy Colony, before rejoining the main corridor

Why This Bypass Matters

The heavy traffic on the highway at Thiruvarur, passes through busy commercial areas and towns at present. It is expected that the bypass will divert this highway traffic, reducing time for commuters by approximately 15 minutes while preventing them from passing through town and reducing accident risks in crowded places. It is also designed to strengthen the link between industrial hubs and Tamil Nadu’s eastern ports,

  • Industrial hubs served: Tiruchirappalli, Coimbatore
  • Port towns connected: Karaikal, Nagapattinam

It will facilitate faster cargo evacuation from the port belt, benefiting manufacturing and export-linked businesses in the region.

Additional Connectivity Gains

In addition to improving the traffic situation through Thiruvarur, the detour road will provide good access to SH-23 and SH-65, state highways that are major access routes to the larger Thanjavur-Nagapattinam road corridor. The bypass also ensures better connectivity to the famous Thyagaraja Swamy Temple in Thiruvarur, which attracts pilgrims on an annual basis to the city of Thiruvarur.

The Two Additional Road Over Bridges

Along with the bypass, the ministry also approved two Road Over Bridges (ROBs) over NH-129A and NH-134A in the Nagapattinam-Thanjavur corridor to overcome level-crossing delays and make traffic at the rail crossings on the corridor more seamless.

All in all

The Thiruvarur bypass is a further addition to the highway works being implemented in the state to decongest towns and strengthen industrial to port logistics corridors. Having received the approval from the ministry, the highway is now likely to proceed to the implementation stage providing relief to commuters in the Thiruvarur town along with boosting the trade movements.
