Synopsis: This article covers the factors contributing to the rise in NRIs choosing indian health insurance and what they use these insurances for.

As healthcare expenses worldwide continue to rise, India is emerging as the preferred destination for health-related services. According to Policybazaar data, the year-on-year purchase of health insurance by NRIs has risen by 126%. This shows how the Indian health insurance has become a calculated healthcare strategy for millions of NRIs.

Why Are NRIs Actually Choosing Indian Health Insurance?

1. Cheaper Premium: While the annual health insurance premium for foreign nations such as the Gulf, the US, and Europe often varies between $2,000 to $3,000 a year, the high-end Indian health insurance is almost one-tenth of these premiums- around $120 to $300 a year. In addition, NRI policyholders are further given a reduction in premiums up to 40%, which makes the Indian health insurance options even more cost-effective.

2. Lower Cost: In India, healthcare expenses such as surgeries, diagnostics, and consultations are often 70-90% lower than those of the developed nations. Even after considering the airfare expense, India remains the cheaper option.

3. Geography: While the healthcare infrastructure in the Gulf is advanced, insurance premiums and treatment costs remain significantly high. In Europe, the long waiting periods even for non-emergency treatments is issue more than the cost. Policyholders in the US and Canada face issues such as high deductibles and out-of-pocket expenses for treatments. These varied reasons force NRIs to consider cheaper alternatives for health-related services.

4. Family: Data shows that there is a year-on-year increase in parental and family floater health insurance from 32% and 20%  to 60% and 70%, respectively. This shows that there is a transition happening from individual NRI policies to policies that include their family. With the help of technology, insurers now offer concierge services, online claims management, tele-consultation, and tracking hospitalization.

What Are NRIs Actually Using Indian Health Insurance For?

A major share of claims is related to ageing-related procedures such as cataract or vision correction treatments, orthopaedic interventions, etc. Another major driver is claims for the treatment of chronic health issues such as diabetes, hypertension, and respiratory conditions, where regular consultations and medication are required. With the help of outpatient cover (OPD), it has become easier for policyholders to claim such recurring costs involved.

Another way in which NRIs are using Indian health insurance is to plan treatments for non-emergency health issues such as joint replacements, cardiac procedures, and oncology-related care.

Why Are NRIs Choosing Bigger Covers and Multi-Year Policies?

Even when the medical expenses in India are relatively cheaper than those of other developed nations, the medical inflation in the country is around 14% a year, which is spiking hospitalisation and post-hospitalisation costs. This nudges NRIs to choose health insurance with higher coverage limits to ensure that the policy remains adequate.

There has also been a shift to multi-year policies that provide protection against the annual premium hikes and reduce the burden of frequent renewals. It provides predictability, which allows NRIs to plan health treatments ahead.

Why Is OPD and Dental Cover No Longer Optional?

There has been an increase from 7% to 20% in including OPD coverage in the health policies of NRIs. Healthcare expenses that do not require hospital admission, such as consultations or diagnostic tests, are covered under this. It also includes the ongoing expenses for the regular checkups or medications associated with chronic treatments. So, by adding OPD to the coverage, NRIs are expanding their benefits.

It has been noticed that dental care has also become a prominent healthcare claim among the NRI policyholders. It is understood that the expensive nature of dental treatments abroad could be the reason why many NRIs now seek Indian health policies with dental benefits.

Conclusion

The low premiums, cheaper treatment costs, and digital-first access are filling the gap that high costs and long waiting periods made in the global healthcare market. This change is unlikely to stay a “secret” for very long. What started as a discreet, budget-conscious option is quickly evolving into a structured healthcare solution, establishing India as a reliable healthcare hub for the Indian diaspora worldwide.
