Synopsis: Bengaluru is planning to have a new corridor that is elevated and this corridor is expected to help reduce traffic and make travelling easier for people who use the SV Road Metro Station to Silk Board route every day.

The new 11.62 km long road will be elevated and it will connect SV Road Metro Station on Old Madras Road to Silk Board Junction. The cost of the project is around ₹1,300 crore. The elevation of the corridor is part of Bengaluru’s plan to deal with the traffic problem that is always there and make it easier to get around the southern parts of the city. The people in charge are looking at the corridor project to see if it is a good idea before they give the signal to move forward with it.

Why is this corridor being planned?

The road between eastern Bengaluru and Silk Board is heavily crowded as many people use this road every day to go between their homes, offices, shops and schools. There are traffic jams at some major intersections which make the travel time very long especially when everyone is going to work or coming home.

The new elevated road they want to build will help cars go faster because there will be no traffic lights so people will not have to wait much and the traffic will move better on the road, between eastern Bengaluru and Silk Board.

Areas That Could Benefit

  • Indiranagar and Domlur are two places that can have smoother travel to central and southern Bengaluru. These places have a lot of traffic because of people going to offices and local people moving all day.
  • Ejipura and Koramangala are busy areas in Bengaluru with a lot of offices and homes and they may have less traffic on the roads that connect them.
  • BTM Layout can have access to the eastern part of the city.
  • People who travel through Silk Board Junction may have less traffic to deal with which is one of the busiest intersections in Bengaluru.
  • The project can also help people who travel between Old Madras Road, Inner Ring Road, Koramangala and the Electronic City corridor.

Part of a Larger Decongestion Plan

The new flyover plan is one of the several ideas to help fix Bengaluru’s traffic problems. The Karnataka government has recently said yes to multiple elevated road projects and fixes for the roads in the city. The project is conceptualized to complement the under construction Ejipura Flyover which is among the 11 new flyovers approved this year. These projects want to make traffic move better, cut down the time it takes to get to places and make it easier to get to the parts of the city where people live and work. Bengaluru is getting bigger and bigger so projects, like roads, flyovers and making the metro bigger will be very important to deal with all the traffic.

Challenges Ahead

Elevated corridors can really help with traffic flow but these projects are not easy to do, they have problems like getting the land, finishing the work on time, taking care of the environment and finding the money to pay for it all.

Experts say that in order to really fix the traffic problem in Bengaluru we need to do a lot of things like building better roads, making public transport more accessible to the public so that the vehicle traffic is less on roads and also plan our city smartly to fight decongestion. If this 11.6-km elevated corridor gets built as planned it will help thousands of people who travel every day and it will be another step for Bengaluru to reduce the traffic congestion that we all hate.
