Synopsis: Magrath Road which is in the business district of Bengaluru has been given a big makeover. This makeover is meant to make things better for people walking on Magrath Road to help with drainage and to make Magrath Road itself better.
A big part of Magrath Road, 350 metres long between Brigade Road and Commissariat Road in Central Bengaluru has been renovated, this renovation is part of a ₹3-crore project that is almost done after a year of construction. This road is one of the major shopping areas in Bengaluru so making it better for everyone who uses it is very important. The project aims to improve both commuter experience and pedestrian accessibility, on Magrath Road.
Key Upgrades Under the Project
- Wider footpaths that people can easily walk on
- Better street lights to improve visibility in the night
- Elevated road level to stop water from collecting
- New underground pipes to help with drainage
- More drains to help rainwater run off quickly
- A special kind of asphalt called Stone Matrix Asphalt for the road surface that will last longer and need work.
Officials said that the new drainage system is supposed to help water flow better when it rains a lot and stop the road from flooding, the redevelopment is really about making the drainage system better. The renovation focusses on improving driving conditions with enhanced infrastructure and connectivity near the Garuda Mall Corridor.
Magrath road has been facing a lot of waterlogging problems for a really long time, so one of the main goals of this project was to solve this issue and this was done by making the road higher by more than a foot and putting in a system to drain stormwater on both sides of Magrath road. Underground stormwater drainage pipes have been installed on both sides of the road. Extra grating were also added to ensure faster drainage during heavy rainfall, improving waterflow management and reducing flooding risk in the area.

The redevelopment of the area was really tough because there was a big power transmission line underground that belonged to KPTCL. It was connected to the Museum Road substation and the people in charge had to work with a lot of groups like civic and utility agencies to make sure everything got done without messing up important services.
Magrath Road is an important road in the middle of Bengaluru where all the big businesses are, it helps people get to Brigade Road, Commissariat Road and the Garuda Mall area. Which is why this makeover is important and it tells us about the broader plan of the city to improve the durability of the road and its stormwater management.
