Synopsis: With Axis Bank releasing Google Pay Flex credit card, we’re looking at a new way to use credit that feels as easy as making a UPI payment. This article explores the benefits, rewards and how to apply for this new credit card.

Google Pay has taken a major step toward adding more value to how Indians access and use credit. The announcement took place on December 17th 2025 where the digital payments giant officially introduced the co-branded Google Pay Flex Credit Card in partnership with Axis Bank and RuPay.

The card is created as a UPI-first and fully digital credit card. Flex aims to make credit as easy as scanning a QR code at a local kirana store. The combination of India’s massive UPI domain with the flexibility of a credit line would allow Google Pay to extend their reach to a new generation of users who value instant rewards, transparency, and app-based control.

What Is Google Pay Flex?

Google Pay Flex is a RuPay credit card that links directly to your UPI ID. This card allows you to make QR-based UPI payments using your credit limit instead of your bank balance. Unlike traditional credit cards that rely on POS machines or delayed rewards, Flex is built around everyday UPI usage.

The card is completely digital right from application and approval to usage and management. Thus, making it more appealing to mobile-first users of this generation.

The Central Card Features (Quick Overview)

  • Pay via UPI with Credit: Link your card to any UPI app to make payments using your credit limit by simply scanning a QR code.
  • Unified App Experience: Manage everything from the initial application to day-to-day card management directly within the Google Pay app.
  • Lifetime Free Benefit: Enjoy the card with zero joining and annual fees (standard interest and bank charges apply).
  • Instant In-App Controls: Set transaction limits, reset your UPI PIN, or block and unblock your card instantly through the interface.

New Innovations Introduced with Google Pay Flex

Flex actually extends beyond being just a credit card by introducing features for families and small businesses.

The New Pocket Money Feature:

  • Parents can set independent spending limits of up to ₹15,000
  • Every transaction requires parental authorization
  • Instant notifications and full transaction history
  • Pause or revoke access instantly from the parent’s app

Features for Small Businesses

  • After payments, customer ratings sync directly to Google Maps listings, this builds merchant credibility.
  • Merchants can use AI to instantly create and launch a campaign without needing any marketing expertise.

Rewards in Stars

The Flex card replaces delayed reward cycles with an instant cashback-style called Stars and 1 Star = ₹1.

  • Earn 1 star on every on every ₹500 spent
  • Unlock 2 stars on eligible transaction of ₹500 on spending of ₹100 or more in the previous cycle
  • Boosted reward of 4 Stars per ₹500 spent for a monthly spend above ₹15,000.
  • Max reward of 8 Stars per ₹500 spend for monthly transactions above ₹30,000.

Example: Say you were “active” last month (spent ₹100+), which unlocks the 2X tier for your current cycle. You then spend ₹35,000 on groceries and bills (70 transactions of ₹500). Your first ₹15,000 earns 60 Stars (at 2X). Once you cross ₹15,000, you unlock the 4X Frequent Spender rate for the next ₹15,000, earning 120 Stars. Finally, spending over ₹30,000 triggers the 8X Power User tier for the remaining ₹5,000, adding 80 Stars. In total, you earn 260 Stars (₹260 value) instantly.
