Synopsis: Daily commuters in KR Puram will have a hard time getting around this week because the roads, near KR Puram Lowry Bridge are going to be closed for repair.

Traffic around KR Puram will be problematic in the coming days because of the repair work going on near Lowry Bridge. The authorities are closing some roads for few days, so commuters need to think about their route and use alternatives to avoid traffic jams. The Lowry Under Bridge in KR Puram area will be closed from June 4 to June 9 so that the South Western railway can replace the bridge slabs. This closure will cause problems for thousands of people who travel through KR Puram every day as KR Puram is one of the prime areas, in East Bengaluru.

Areas likely to be impacted

The traffic restrictions are going to cause problems, for people who want to move around these areas of East Bengaluru :

  • KR Puram
  • Ramamurthy Nagar
  • ITI Colony
  • Whitefield
  • ITPL
  • Hoodi
  • Mahadevapura
  • Benniganahalli
  • Tin Factory Junction
  • Old Madras Road corridor

The railway authorities informed that they are doing this to make the railway safer and better. The road closure will probably cause problems for people going to Whitefield and ITPL where a lot of people work, now that schools are open again and people are going to work every day there will be a lot of traffic on the roads around the area especially during peak morning and evening hours.

Alternative Routes for Commuters

The drivers can take these alternative routes when the closure starts :

  • If you are going to KR Puram or Ramamurthy Nagar or ITI Colony you should use the KR Puram Cable-Stayed Bridge.
  • If you are going to Whitefield and ITPL and you usually go under the Lowry Under Bridge you should use the KR Puram Cable-Stayed Bridge.
  • One part of the KR Puram–ITPL Main Road that goes to Whitefield and ITPL will be closed from 6 pm on June 7 until 6 am, on June 8, during this time the traffic will go through the Road Under Bridge instead.

Expected Impact on Travel

Not much information is available about how much additional time it will take to travel but people who commute daily should get ready for slow traffic and delay in reaching their destination, especially in the peak hours. The officials want people to think about their trip ahead of time, leave their house earlier if they can and pay attention to the signs that show them where to go. They also want people to check how bad the traffic is before they start driving. This will be a problem for a while until they finish working on the railway bridge on June 9. Authorities say they have to do this work to make sure the railway bridge is safe and works properly for a time and when they are done traffic should go back, to normal under the Lowry Under Bridge.
