Documents required for opening a demat account: A full checklist

by Trade Brains | Jul 22, 2026

Getting your demat account documents sorted before you start the application saves you from the most common cause of delays: last-minute document mismatches. A surprising number of applications get stuck not because a document is missing, but because two documents disagree with each other on a detail as small as a middle name or a PIN code. Here’s the full checklist, broken down by category, along with why each document is asked for in the first place.

Which documents are required to open a demat account?

At a broad level, every applicant needs proof of identity, proof of address, a PAN card, and proof of a bank account. Some brokers also ask for a passport-size photograph, though this is increasingly optional with video-based KYC replacing that requirement for most applicants.

These four categories exist because SEBI’s KYC framework requires a broker to independently verify who you are, where you live, your tax identity, and where your money will move to and from. Each document maps to one of those checks rather than being an arbitrary formality.

“Most rejections we see aren’t about missing documents, they’re about mismatched details, like a name spelt differently across PAN and Aadhaar,” a Chola Securities spokesperson said. “Getting that consistent upfront avoids almost all of it. We’d rather an applicant take five extra minutes checking their documents than have the whole process stall for a week over a spelling difference.”

That’s a useful filter to apply before you even start the process: pull out your PAN, Aadhaar, and bank documents side by side and check that your name, date of birth, and address match across all three before uploading anything.

What counts as valid identity proof?

For proof of identity demat purposes, the PAN card is the primary and non-negotiable document. Every broker requires it, and it’s typically cross-verified against the Income Tax Department’s database as part of the automated KYC check.

Alongside PAN, Aadhaar card, passport, voter ID, or driving licence are all accepted as supporting ID proof depending on the broker’s checklist. Most applicants end up submitting Aadhaar simply because it doubles as address proof, cutting the document list by one item.

If you hold multiple forms of ID with slightly different name spellings, for instance if your passport lists a full middle name while your PAN doesn’t, it’s worth getting that corrected beforehand rather than hoping the system won’t flag it. It usually does.

What counts as valid address proof?

Proof of address demat requirements are usually satisfied by Aadhaar card, utility bills (not older than 2-3 months), passport, or a bank statement showing your current address. Ration cards and rent agreements are accepted by some brokers too, though less commonly than the four listed above.

If you’re opening a DEMAT account through Chola Securities, Aadhaar typically covers both identity and address in a single step, so most applicants list it first and rarely need a second address document.

One detail that trips people up: your address proof needs to reflect your current residential address, not a permanent address that no longer applies. If you’ve recently moved cities and your Aadhaar hasn’t been updated yet, a utility bill or bank statement from your current address is usually the faster fix than waiting on an Aadhaar update.

Is proof of income required for a demat account?

Proof of income isn’t required for a basic demat account, but it’s necessary if you plan to trade in derivatives or intraday segments. In that case, a salary slip, an ITR copy, or a bank statement showing a sufficient balance is usually requested separately, not at the time of basic account opening.

This distinction matters because many first-time applicants assume income proof is part of the standard checklist and either delay their application while looking for it or submit it unnecessarily when it isn’t required at all for cash-segment equity investing.

Are passport-size photos still needed?

Fewer brokers ask for this now that video KYC has become standard, since your photo gets captured as part of that verification step anyway. A few brokers still request one for record-keeping, but it’s no longer a hard requirement across the industry the way it was a few years ago.

If your broker’s application flow doesn’t explicitly ask for a photo upload, it’s safe to assume the video verification step is handling that requirement instead.

Quick answers on documentation

Is PAN card mandatory?

Yes, without exception. Every demat account, regardless of broker, requires a valid PAN card as the primary identity document, and there’s no substitute for it under current SEBI norms.

Can Aadhaar be used as address proof?

Yes, Aadhaar is accepted as both identity and address proof by nearly every broker, which is why it’s the most commonly submitted document during demat account documentation checks.

Is a cancelled cheque required?

Most brokers ask for either a cancelled cheque or a recent bank statement to verify your linked bank account details before activation. Either one is generally sufficient on its own.

What if your address has changed recently?

Submit your updated address proof at the time of application. If your Aadhaar still reflects an old address, a recent utility bill or bank statement showing the current one usually works as a substitute until your Aadhaar details catch up.

Put together, none of these documents is unusual or hard to source; most people already have PAN, Aadhaar, and a bank account on hand. The part that actually determines how smoothly your application moves is consistency across them, which is worth double-checking before you submit rather than after a broker flags a mismatch.
