The investment is part of Hero MotoCorp’s strategy to increase its manufacturing presence and its manufacturing of components, logistics and electric mobility related infrastructure in the state. The company will make Andhra Pradesh one of its manufacturing and supply chain centres to cater to the local demand and exports.
Why The Company Chose Andhra Pradesh
Andhra Pradesh has emerged as a key production center for Hero MotoCorp because of the existing operations of the company in the state as well as improvements in the industrial infrastructure and logistics connectivity. The company currently has a large-scale manufacturing operation in the vicinity of Sri City, while the company’s EV designing, engineering and manufacturing operations are located in Tirupati. Due to the availability of a competent labor force, a thriving supplier network and encouragement from the government in terms of making investments in industry, the state provides a good platform to Hero MotoCorp.
Employment and Economic Impact
Around 4,000 jobs are expected to become available once the project is in operation, a number that has been linked to other policy objectives by both company and government representatives. Hero MotoCorp has explained the job creation in the context of the government’s vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 and state officials have linked it to the state’s SwarnAndhra initiative for the economic development of the region. The facility, beyond its direct employment impact, is also expected to serve as an economic catalyst for the broader Rayalaseema region, with CM Naidu stating that the company’s facilities have already boosted local supply chains and contributed to the region’s growth in previous years.
Strategic Context: Scaling Up Tirupati
Currently Hero MotoCorp has a big 2 wheeler manufacturing unit near Sri City which can produce 1.5 million vehicles per year. Significantly, the company has the design, engineering and manufacturing of all its electric vehicle offerings based at Tirupati. Due to this new investment, the Tirupati plant will be able to produce between 1.2 and 1.5 million units per year, further strengthening the city’s role as an important manufacturing hub for future mobility in India.
In addition to the industrial announcement, Hero MotoCorp also launched two community initiatives in partnership with the Andhra Pradesh government, namely:
- The “Dr. Brijmohan Lall Munjal Heroes of Tomorrow Scholarship” that provides full tuition fee waivers to meritorious students studying engineering and aims at building and developing technical talent in the state in the future.
- The deployment of VIDA electric scooters and special road safety training for women police officers in Tirupati, is an initiative under its sustainable mobility and inclusive mobility drive, for women’s safety and mobility.
