Global events/updates

French Prime Minister François Bayrou and his minority government face a confidence vote on Monday, which he is highly likely to lose. Bayrou has struggled to gain enough support from opposition lawmakers for his austerity budget proposal that includes around 44 billion euros ($51.3 billion) in spending cuts aimed at reducing France’s budget deficit.

The expected collapse of his government will deepen political instability in France and pose challenges for President Emmanuel Macron, who must appoint a new prime minister amid a fragmented parliament and ongoing fiscal pressures.

Two prominent candidates have emerged for Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leadership race: former economic security minister Sanae Takaichi and current agriculture minister Shinjiro Koizumi. If elected, Takaichi would become Japan’s first female prime minister, noted for her strong policy ideas and conservative stance, while Koizumi is seen as a more moderate and reliable candidate with potential to build compromise.

US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a tougher second phase of sanctions on Russia following the Kremlin’s heaviest aerial strikes on Ukraine, which involved over 810 drones and 13 missiles, marking the largest aerial assault since the conflict began.
