Global events/updates
The OECD has raised its 2025 global growth forecast to 3.2%, up from 2.9% in June, citing stronger-than-expected performance, particularly in emerging markets. While the first half of the year showed resilience, the full impact of tariffs is still uncertain, posing notable risks to the global economic outlook despite the optimistic revisions.
U.S. Treasury yields eased slightly as investors await Fed officials’ comments, including a speech by Chair Jerome Powell. The 10-year yield fell to 4.133%, while the 2-year and 30-year yields were largely unchanged. Following last week’s quarter-point rate cut, markets expect Powell to maintain a dovish tone, with upcoming PCE data providing insight into inflation and economic conditions.
Nvidia’s $100 billion investment in OpenAI was finalized after direct negotiations between the CEOs, timed during President Trump’s U.K. visit. The deal coincided with OpenAI’s infrastructure announcement at Nvidia’s California headquarters. Despite the massive funding, OpenAI plans to raise additional debt and potentially develop its own cloud services, signaling ambitious expansion beyond the Nvidia partnership.
A meeting between U.S. President Trump and Chinese President Xi is now expected next year rather than this fall, according to U.S. Ambassador to China David Perdue. His remarks came during a rare visit to Beijing by a bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers, led by Democratic Representative Adam Smith and including one Republican, marking the first such visit since 2019.
JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon sees AI as a transformative technology that will experience boom-and-bust cycles, similar to past innovations like cars, TV, and the internet. The bank employs 2,000 people across 500 AI use cases. While costs are high now, wider adoption will reduce them. Dimon emphasizes AI’s long-term potential despite some overhyped investments.
