Shubman Gill, after being named as the ODI captain for the first time, opened up on Virat and Rohit’s future. He stressed how important the experience of the two “match-winners” will be in the dressing room amid the debate over their place in the 2027 ODI World Cup.
As India are ready to play their 2nd Test tomorrow against the West Indies, everyone’s eyes are not only on the 2-0 series win but also on Virat and Rohit as they wear the Indian jersey after the Champions Trophy.
The comeback of Virat and Rohit has brought relief to fans, but for Gambhir and the management, it’s a challenge to maintain and build the team after Virat and Rohit’s exit without slowing the team’s progress.
While Virat and Rohit are back in the ODI team against Australia, there isn’t clarity on their future afterwards. Some say that the Australia series will be their last goodbye.

Speaking on this, Gill said, “The experience that we both have and the matches that we’ve won for India there are very few players who have won so many matches for India. There are very few players in the world who have the same skill, the same quality, and the same experience. So, in that sense, I’m very happy.” Gill said in the press conference on Thursday.
This selective participation shows that the workload on these two legends has now reduced, allowing them to focus only on their ODI careers prioritizing quality over quantity. It helps them maintain fitness and energy going into each game.
For the management, it’s all about respecting their experience while giving opportunities to youngsters who play with hunger. Virat and Rohit’s dream of winning the ODI World Cup has not yet been fulfilled, and they both badly want that trophy. Rohit’s recent fitness shows how he is getting ready for the World Cup. The Indian team will leave for Australia on October 15
