The company operates under a consortium of four major ports, which are Visakhapatnam Port Authority, Paradip Port Authority, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, and Deendayal Port Authority, all functioning under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. These agreements aim to strengthen dredging capacity, promote modernization, and support the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

The MoUs were signed with several key ports such as Visakhapatnam, Paradip, Cochin, Chennai, and Mumbai for dredging work over the next few years. DCIL also partnered with Cochin Shipyard for dredger construction, BEML for indigenisation of spares, NMDC and Abu Dhabi-based partners for forming a joint venture to enhance global competitiveness, and IHC for modernizing dredgers to improve efficiency. Further agreements were made with NTCPWC and IIT Chennai for surveys and training, IOCL for uninterrupted fuel supply, and Hindustan Shipyard Limited for dry-docking and repair of dredgers.

PM Modi’s announcement to boost DCIL’s growth

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a Rs. 4,000 crore modernization plan for Dredging Corporation of India Limited (DCIL) during the inauguration of India Maritime Week 2025 as part of the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision. DCIL works under a consortium of four major ports which are Visakhapatnam Port Authority, Paradip Port Authority, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, and Deendayal Port Authority, functioning under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. The plan aims to improve DCIL’s dredging capacity, operational efficiency, and global competitiveness through new dredger construction, technology upgrades, and manpower training while promoting the Make in India and sustainable dredging goals.

Under this plan, DCIL will procure and build 11 new dredgers including large Trailer Suction Hopper Dredgers, a Cutter Suction Dredger, a water injection dredger, and six beaver dredgers for inland waterways. One 12,000 cubic meter TSHD named DCI Dredge Godavari was launched in October 2025 and is expected to be delivered by July 2026, with more orders planned soon. The initiative also focuses on digitalization, automation, and green technologies to improve operations and reduce environmental impact. This investment will strengthen DCIL’s leadership in maintenance dredging and expand its presence in capital dredging and inland waterway development projects across the country.

Management View

Dr. M. Angamuthu, Chairman of Dredging Corporation of India Limited (DCIL) and Chairperson of Visakhapatnam and Mumbai Ports, expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister and the Ministry for their support during the India Maritime Week 2025. He highlighted the Prime Minister’s announcement of a Rs. 4,000 crore investment under the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision to modernize DCIL through the construction of 11 new dredgers, automation, and skill development. He emphasized that these initiatives and MoUs will help DCIL meet the dredging needs of ports, upgrade its fleet, and promote self-reliance through indigenization.

Capt. S. Divakar, Managing Director and CEO of DCIL, stated that the company is India’s leading dredging organization and that the new MoUs with ports and industry partners will strengthen its global presence. He explained that DCIL currently operates 10 Trailer Suction Hopper Dredgers with a total capacity of about 60,000 cubic meters, enabling 50–60 million cubic meters of dredging annually, which meets around 55 percent of India’s total dredging needs. The addition of new vessels under the modernization plan will enhance capacity and reaffirm DCIL’s leadership in the sector.
