Synopsis: This article highlights three PSU companies BHEL, HAL, and BEL that support ISRO through critical hardware, satellite systems, and space infrastructure, strengthening India’s space capabilities and self-reliance.

India’s space ecosystem has evolved rapidly over the last decade, positioning the country as a global leader in affordable satellite launches and advanced space research. While ISRO continues to spearhead major missions, the backbone of this progress lies in the support provided by key public sector undertakings.

PSUs like BHEL, HAL, and BEL have been instrumental in developing critical components, propulsion systems, satellite communication equipment, and other mission-essential infrastructure, strengthening India’s technological self-reliance. Alongside these government-owned giants, private firms and emerging space start-ups are also gaining momentum, creating a collaborative ecosystem that is propelling India’s space ambitions to new heights.

The following are the stocks:

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited has long-standing partnerships in the aerospace sector with key organizations such as the Armed Forces, ISRO, HAL, ADA, NAL, and DRDO for various projects. The company is also setting up a dedicated facility to manufacture aluminium alloy tankages for ISRO’s launch vehicles.

The company has a strong in-house expertise in the design, development, manufacturing, testing, and validation of critical thermal and fluid systems. Additionally, it supplies pump modules for aerospace applications, which are crucial components used in airborne pods and radar systems.

BHEL has partnered with ISRO since 1992, supplying space-grade solar panels and Li-ion batteries for major satellites like GSAT-30 and GSAT-11. It also provided power systems for the Chandrayaan-2 mission, strengthening its role as a key Indian contributor to the nation’s space program.

It has supplied 102 satellite batteries so far and is prepared to make batteries for the Gaganyaan missions. With a clean-room facility, ISRO-certified staff, and advanced testing equipment, the division has strong in-house capability to support India’s space power needs.

With a market capitalization of Rs.91,822.01 crore, the shares of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited closed at Rs. 263.70 , up by 1.44 percent from its previous closing price of Rs.259.95.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited’s Aerospace Division in Bangalore plays a vital role in India’s space programs by manufacturing critical hardware such as aluminium alloy structures, welded propellant tanks, and cryogenic stage components for launch vehicles like PSLV, GSLV Mk II, and GSLV Mk III.

Established in 1972, the division also handles the integration of the L-40 strap-on stage for GSLV Mk II. With over 500 skilled personnel and certifications including AS 9100C QMS and ISO 14001:2015 EMS, it stands as a key contributor to ISRO’s growing space capabilities.

It also contributes to projects such as the ISRO–NASA NISAR mission by providing structural and propulsion systems. Recently, HAL signed an agreement to receive complete technology transfer for the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle, allowing it to design and build small satellite launchers.

HAL’s Aerospace Division in Bengaluru manufactures large aluminium alloy structures, welded propellant tanks, and related components for India’s launch vehicles, including the LVM3 (GSLV Mk III).

In June 2024, the division inaugurated a new propellant tank production and CNC machining facility to boost India’s rocket manufacturing capacity. These state-of-the-art facilities were set up to support the production of up to six LVM3 launch vehicles per year, significantly enhancing India’s capability to build its most powerful rockets.

With a market capitalization of Rs. 3,09,438.85 crore, the shares of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited closed at Rs. 4,626.95, up by 0.76 percent from its previous closing price of Rs.4,592.05.

Bharat Electronics Limited

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) is a key player in satellite communication, supported by advanced clean-room, testing, and EMI/EMC facilities, along with CMMI Level-5 and ISO certifications. The company has dedicated R&D and manufacturing teams working on precision space-electronic systems.

BEL develops and supplies satellite communication products such as Satcom networks, ground terminals, Satcom-on-the-Move systems, manpack terminals, and IRNSS navigation receivers in collaboration with ISRO.

In the space hardware segment, BEL has completed Assembly, Integration, and Testing of three RISAT satellites under ISRO’s supervision, and provides space-grade products like LTCC substrates, TWTAs, TRM assemblies, and C/Ku-Band receivers. It is also exploring LEO satellite constellations and aims to support future launch vehicle production with ISRO.
