Synopsis: Torrent Power is expanding across renewable energy, thermal generation, storage and transmission while maintaining strong distribution operations. Its ongoing projects and financial position support long-term growth opportunities. 

The shares of this mid cap company majorly engaged in the business of generation, transmission and distribution of power were in focus after the company planned to expand  across renewable energy, thermal generation, storage and transmission. 

With the market capitalization of Rs. 72,356 Crores, the shares of Torrent Power Ltd were trading at around Rs. 1436 per share which is 21 percent discount from its 52 weeks high of Rs. 1824 per share and is trading at a P/E of 30 whereas industry P/E stands at 32.4.

Renewable Capacity Set for Major Expansion

Torrent Power plans to nearly double its operational generation capacity from around 5.1 GW to 10.6 GW through ongoing renewable and thermal projects. The company currently operates 1,081 MWp of solar capacity and 921 MW of wind capacity, while another 1,787 MWp of solar and 2,163 MW of wind projects are under development. This reflects management’s focus on increasing the share of clean energy within its portfolio.

Large Renewable Project Pipeline

The company has approximately 4.3 GW of renewable capacity under installation against contracted capacity of about 2.3 GW, with an estimated investment of nearly ₹27,830 crore. The portfolio includes projects for SECI, MSEDCL, railway-linked projects, captive and commercial & industrial customers, along with merchant projects. These projects are expected to be commissioned in phases over the next few years, supporting long-term earnings growth.

₹23,000 Crore Thermal Project Adds Long-Term Visibility

Torrent Power is developing a 1,600 MW (2×800 MW) ultra-supercritical thermal power project in Madhya Pradesh with an estimated investment of ₹23,000 crore. The project has secured a 25-year power purchase agreement and necessary development approvals, including environmental clearance. The project is expected to provide stable revenue visibility once commissioned and strengthen the company’s generation portfolio.

Building a Strong Energy Storage Platform

The company is developing a 3,000 MW pumped storage hydro project in Maharashtra with an estimated investment of about ₹14,000 crore. It has already tied up 2,000 MW / 16,000 MWh of capacity under a 40-year agreement, creating a long-term revenue opportunity. Beyond this, Torrent Power has identified an overall pumped storage pipeline of around 8.4 GW across Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, highlighting its focus on future energy storage requirements.

Transmission Business Continues to Expand

Torrent Power is expanding its transmission footprint through new projects and existing assets. The company recently secured the Solapur transmission project for renewable power evacuation with an estimated project cost of ₹500 crore and annual fixed charges for 35 years. It has also commissioned a transmission project linked to renewable energy evacuation in Gujarat, further strengthening its infrastructure portfolio.

Distribution Remains a Key Strength

The company’s distribution operations continue to perform strongly. Ahmedabad and Surat reported distribution losses of only 3.35% and 2.77%, respectively, along with 99.9% power availability. In franchisee areas, Torrent Power has significantly reduced losses over the years, with Bhiwandi losses falling from 58% at takeover to around 9.1% in FY26, demonstrating sustained operational improvement.

Torrent Power is positioning itself for long-term growth through investments across renewable energy, thermal generation, pumped storage, transmission and green hydrogen.
