According to the company’s press release, the launch has been undertaken through Glenmark Specialty S.A. (GSSA), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Glenmark Pharmaceuticals. The product has been introduced across several European markets, including the Nordics, Central and Eastern Europe, and Spain, while launches in Portugal and other regions are being pursued through strategic partnerships.

The launch follows the European Commission’s approval granted in October 2025 to Cassiopea S.p.A., a subsidiary of Cosmo N.V., for the treatment of acne vulgaris in adults and adolescents aged 12 to below 18 years.

Winlevi® is considered a significant innovation in dermatology as it is the first topical acne treatment introduced in more than 40 years with a first-in-class mechanism of action. Its active ingredient, clascoterone, is the first commercially available topical androgen receptor inhibitor that acts locally within sebaceous glands to reduce sebum production and inflammation without causing systemic anti-androgen effects.

The launch is particularly important given the widespread prevalence of acne. Industry estimates indicate that more than 95 percent of males and 85 percent of females experience acne during adolescence, while nearly half continue to face the condition into adulthood. Acne can significantly affect both physical appearance and psychological well-being, making effective treatment options an important area of demand within dermatology.

Glenmark stated that the launch reflects its continued focus on bringing differentiated therapies to patients and healthcare professionals across global markets. The company plans to leverage a combination of direct commercial presence and strategic partnerships to expand the product’s reach across Europe.

Commenting on the development, Jiri Havranek, Group Vice President and Business Head – Europe at Glenmark Pharmaceuticals, said the launch represents an important step in strengthening the company’s dermatology portfolio and branded business in the region. He added that it demonstrates Glenmark’s ability to successfully execute multi-market launches while expanding access to innovative therapies.

The development also supports Glenmark’s broader strategy of increasing its presence in specialty pharmaceuticals, where differentiated products generally offer higher margins and stronger brand recognition compared to traditional generic medicines.

Incorporated as a global research-led pharmaceutical company, Glenmark Pharmaceuticals operates across branded formulations, specialty products, generics, and consumer healthcare segments. The company maintains 11 manufacturing facilities and six R&D centers worldwide and focuses on therapeutic areas including respiratory, dermatology, and oncology.

The launch of Winlevi® not only marks Glenmark’s first NCE launch in Europe but also strengthens its position in the global dermatology market, potentially opening new growth opportunities in specialty pharmaceuticals across the region.
