Synopsis: Telecom and ICT giant RailTel Corporation of India Limited bagged a work order of Rs 18.54 crore from the Information Technology and Electronics Department, Government of Uttar Pradesh, for the setting up and maintenance of Atal Tinkering Labs (ATL) in schools across the state, further consolidating its presence in the fast-growing digital education infrastructure space in India.
As India’s digital infrastructure frontier shifts to grassroots education, RailTel has expanded its enterprise portfolio by securing a high-margin educational hardware and training contract from the Uttar Pradesh government. This milestone boosts immediate top-line visibility and cements its tech leadership.
Shares of Railtel Corporation Of India Limited were trading at Rs 310.8, up by 2.62 percent from the previous close of Rs 302.9. The stock opened at Rs 304.5, touching an intraday high of Rs 313.35 and a low of Rs 304.3. The company currently commands a market capitalization of Rs. 9,960 crore.
What Happened?
The Information Technology and Electronics Department, Government of Uttar Pradesh, has issued a work order for ₹18.54 crore (including taxes) to RailTel Corporation of India Limited. The contract is for design, supply, installation, commissioning, training, support and maintenance of Atal Tinkering Labs (ATL) and vocational education laboratories in schools under the Department of Secondary Education, Uttar Pradesh.
The project involves the installation of hardware, training of teachers, training of staff and long-term maintenance services, making RailTel responsible for the complete execution of digital learning infrastructure. The filing stated that the contract must be completed by November 17, 2027.
What Are Atal Tinkering Labs?
Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs) are innovation centres set up by the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) of the Government of India to foster science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education among school students.
The labs give students the chance to work with cutting-edge technologies like robotics, electronics, 3D printing, the Internet of Things (IoT), sensors, artificial intelligence and coding tools. This experiential learning inspires innovation from an early age. ATLs are not just limited to classroom teaching but also to developing practical problem-solving skills, design thinking and entrepreneurship skills in students.
Why Does This Matter?
The order value is relatively small in the context of RailTel’s overall order book, but it further consolidates the company’s position in the government digital transformation ecosystem.
However, unlike traditional EPC contracts, projects with digital classrooms and innovation labs typically involve hardware deployment, software integration, training, technical support, and maintenance services, offering opportunities for recurring engagement beyond the initial installation stage. The success of the project also adds to RailTel’s credentials to take part in similar education technology projects in other states, too.
Financials
The company closed Q4 FY26 with revenue rising to Rs 1,669 crore, up 82.8 per cent sequentially from Rs 913 crore in Q3 FY26 and up 27.6 per cent year-on-year from Rs 1,308 crore in Q4 FY25.
Operating profit at Rs 233 crore was higher by 75.2 percent quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) and 29.4 percent year-on-year (YoY) against Rs 133 crore in Q3 FY26 and Rs 180 crore in Q4 FY25. Operating profit margin was flat at 14 percent in line with Q4 FY25 and slightly below 15 percent in Q3 FY26 but the sharp earnings improvement was driven by volume-led growth.
Net profit rose to Rs 142 crore, up 129 percent quarter-on-quarter from Rs 62 crore and 25.7 percent year-on-year from Rs 113 crore in Q4 of FY25. EPS improved to Rs 4.42 compared to Rs 1.94 in the previous quarter and Rs 3.53 a year ago.
The company has maintained healthy return ratios with ROCE of 22.8 per cent and ROE of 17.1 per cent. It has delivered compounded sales growth of 26 percent and compounded profit growth of 21 percent over the past five years, a steady expansion of earnings over the long haul.
The balance sheet continues to be very strong with a debt-to-equity ratio at a very low 0.03, cash and cash equivalents at Rs 654 crore, and a healthy current ratio of 1.32, leaving the company with ample financial flexibility. One major trend on the balance sheet is the continued decline in Capital Work-in-Progress (CWIP), which has fallen from Rs 124 crore in FY25 to Rs 81 crore in FY26, continuing a multi-year decline from Rs 364 crore in FY18. This steady decline suggests that major capital projects are being commissioned and moved into productive fixed assets, reducing idle capital while increasing asset utilisation and supporting future revenue generation.
Industry Outlook
The Indian education technology infrastructure is witnessing sustained investment with the central and state governments fast-tracking digital transformation of schools under initiatives such as the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, Digital India and Atal Innovation Mission.
With the emphasis on STEM education, AI, robotics, coding and vocational learning rising, demand for smart classrooms, digital laboratories and connected school infrastructure is expected to grow steadily. RailTel and other companies with domain expertise in telecom networks, system integration, cloud services, cybersecurity and IT infrastructure are well-positioned to take advantage of this long-term digitalisation trend.
