OpenAI has announced the launch of its first corporate office in New Delhi, marking a significant step to expand its presence in India, its second-largest user base after the U.S. The move is aimed at building stronger collaboration with the government, enterprises, and developers while tapping into India’s vast technology talent pool to deliver AI solutions tailored for local needs. The company noted that user growth in India has quadrupled over the past year, underscoring the country’s rising importance in the global AI landscape.

ChatGPT, OpenAI’s flagship AI, enables users to engage in natural, interactive dialogue for content creation, tutoring, coding, brainstorming, and more. It supports multiple Indian languages, making it highly accessible across diverse user segments. Its versatility has made it one of the most widely adopted AI tools globally, with strong traction in India.

Perplexity AI, positioned as a research-focused AI assistant, combines natural language understanding with live web search to provide accurate, real-time, and sourced responses. Unlike traditional chatbots, it emphasizes transparency by linking users directly to original sources. This approach has quickly gained popularity, especially for fact verification, academic research, and real-time updates.

A key driver of Perplexity’s growth in India is its partnership with Bharti Airtel. Airtel customers are being offered 12 months of complimentary access to Perplexity Pro, a package valued at nearly Rs. 17,000. With Airtel’s subscriber base, this bundling is expected to accelerate Perplexity’s adoption across the country, creating benefits for both companies.

Perplexity’s Pro plan, priced at Rs. 1,999 per month, offers users ten times more citations per response along with access to Perplexity Labs for managing and executing complex projects.

The subscription includes unlimited file and photo uploads, extended research capabilities, expanded image generation, and limited use of its video AI tool. Subscribers also gain access to the latest leading AI models such as GPT-5 and Claude Sonnet 4.

Perplexity further states that the Pro plan will continue to unlock additional perks beyond these features. Perplexity Pro provides access to the newest AI models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and other providers, including a mix of proprietary and open-source models.

OpenAI has rolled out India-specific pricing with its ChatGPT Go plan at Rs. 399 per month, offering GPT-5 access, higher message limits, image generation, file uploads, and added memory for students and individual users.

ChatGPT Plus, priced at Rs. 1,999 per month, provides GPT-4o, faster responses, priority access, expanded limits, file and image uploads, image generation, and custom GPTs for advanced personal and professional use. For enterprises, ChatGPT Pro at Rs. 19,900 per month delivers business-scale performance with enhanced collaboration features, expanded usage, and priority support.

Functionally, ChatGPT stands out in context-rich conversations, creativity-driven tasks, coding, and learning assistance, while Perplexity’s strength lies in real-time, credible, and sourced information delivery.

User experience also differs: ChatGPT’s conversational interface is suited for longer, interactive sessions with a nuanced understanding of Indian English and regional phrases, whereas Perplexity offers a search-style experience prioritizing brevity and linked sources.

Both platforms support multiple Indian languages, but ChatGPT excels in conversational fluency and linguistic subtleties, while Perplexity has an edge in local, time-sensitive information such as news, government updates, and market trends.

Pricing strategies also reflect contrasting approaches. OpenAI’s focus on affordability and accessibility through UPI integration versus Perplexity’s aggressive distribution via Airtel’s free Pro access, with chances that Airtel’s biggest rival Jio could also partner with OpenAI in the future, given the rising trend of AI in India.

In summary, ChatGPT and Perplexity AI are emerging as complementary tools in India’s AI ecosystem. ChatGPT is best positioned for users seeking creative, educational, and conversational capabilities, while Perplexity is better suited for real-time research, fact-checking, and timely updates. Together, they address the full spectrum of AI needs in India, driving deeper adoption and innovation across one of the fastest-growing digital markets.
