During Friday’s trading session, shares of one of the larger producers of ethanol and a pioneer in manufacturing ethanol-based chemicals in India hit a 5 percent upper circuit on the stock exchanges, after the company announced securing a patent in Europe for its anticancer molecule.
With a market cap of Rs. 1,323.4 crores, the shares of Godavari Biorefineries Limited hit a 5 percent upper circuit at Rs. 258.6 on BSE, as against its previous closing price of Rs. 246.3. The stock has delivered negative returns of around 24 percent in one year, and has fallen by more than 7 percent in the last month.

According to the latest regulatory filings with the stock exchanges, Godavari Biorefineries Limited has been granted a patent in Europe for its novel anticancer molecule. The patent has been validated in Spain, the UK, and as a Unitary Patent. Falling under the “Anti-Cancer Research” subject area, it covers a highly effective compound that has demonstrated strong results against both cancer cells and cancer stem cells.

Godavari Biorefineries reported a marginal decline in its revenue from operations, showing a year-on-year fall of around 6 percent from Rs. 615 crores in Q4 FY24 to Rs. 580 crores in Q4 FY25. In contrast, its net profit increased during the same period from Rs. 65 crores to Rs. 72 crores, representing a slight growth of about 11 percent YoY.
As part of its cancer molecule research efforts in Q4 FY25, Godavari Biorefineries received approval from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) to initiate clinical trials for a proposed drug on Triple-Negative Breast Cancer patients with advanced solid tumours. Additionally, safety trials for the molecule are currently in progress and are expected to be completed by Q2 FY26.
Godavari Biorefineries Limited is principally engaged in the manufacturing of sugar, ethanol, distillery, rectified spirits, biochemicals, power generation, and other bio products. It was among the first few companies in India to utilise sugarcane juice and syrup for the production of ethanol.
The bio-based chemicals manufactured by the company find application in various industries, including the agrochemical, cosmetics, flavour and fragrance, food, fuel, paints and coatings, and pharma industries, while the ethanol manufactured is sold to oil marketing companies and also finds application in the beverages, pharmaceutica,l and chemical industries.
