  • Japan’s $550 Billion US Deal: Mostly Loans, Minimal Investment
    • Japan’s chief negotiator, Ryosei Akazawa, made it clear that just 1% to 2% of the $550 billion US-Japan investment framework will be direct investments. The majority will come in the form of loans and guarantees. While the US is set to pocket 90% of the investment profits, Japan is looking to earn interest and fees from those loans and guarantees, which helps to keep their losses to a minimum.
    • Akazawa pointed out that this isn’t about cash being handed over; it’s a well-structured financial program that they expect to wrap up during President Trump’s time in office. Additionally, Japan anticipates saving around ¥10 trillion (about $68 billion) through tariff reductions as part of this larger agreement.
