What is NAGASTRA-I?
NAGASTRA-I India’s Indigenous ‘Suicide Drone’, manufactured by Nagpur-based Solar Industries, is an explosive-equipped drone that can circle over a place, collect information, and attack only when a precise target is found. In contrast to normal missiles, they can abort or postpone attacks in order to limit collateral damage. The drone carries a 1 kg payload and relies on GPS to attack targets with precision within 2 meters.
Benefits of NAGASTRA-I
Nagastra-1 is a loitering munition drone with precision, versatility, and stealth capabilities. GPS-guided targeting allows it to target with up to 2 meters accuracy at ranges of up to 30 km, reducing collateral damage. It has a 60-minute endurance, 15 km operator range, and 30 km autonomous range. Its electric drive technology provides low noise and radar detection, capable of working at low altitudes as 200 meters for stealth operations.
Weighing 1 kg of high-explosive warhead, it operates both day and night in harsh environments at altitudes of up to 4,500 meters. A major plus is reusability, if no strike is attempted, it can parachute back, saving money. It is composed of 75 percent indigenous parts, and it’s also 40 percent less expensive than comparable foreign systems, demonstrating India’s increasing defense capabilities.
Conclusion
The successful induction of the Nagastra-1 in Operation Sindoor is a major victory for India’s defence industry as well as for the “Make in India” campaign. It demonstrates the country’s growing reliance on indigenous technologies for defence as well as the desire to avail itself of native innovation for its national security interests. With renewed border tensions, vigilance as well as a focus on smartly utilizing every resource at its disposal, whether conventional or native, is the mantra for national safety.
